DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has responded to a fan who was angry about the cancelation of DC's Legends of Tomorrow. The series, which ran for seven seasons between 2016 and 2022, is one of the longest-running series in the Arrowverse, a family of interconnected series about DC heroes that have been airing on The CW since the original series, Arrow, premiered in 2012. Earlier this year, three of the remaining Arrowverse series - Naomi, Batwoman, and Legends of Tomorrow - were canceled and it was announced that the next season of The Flash would be its last, leaving only the Supergirl spinoff Superman & Lois on the slate. On Twitter, Gunn recently answered a fan's question about his favorite Clint Eastwood movies, sharing titles including Unforgiven and For a Few Dollars More. A Legends of Tomorrow fan added a reply saying "who gives a f - #SaveLegendsofTomorrow already." This led Gunn to fire back, asking why the fan would write something like that, saying that "if it’s to achieve your objective it certainly is about the worst possible way to go about it." Could The Arrowverse Continue?

The fate of the Arrowverse has seemed precarious since The CW took the axe to a major portion of their lineup. It continues to be on thin ice in the coming year, as recently revealed by a quarterly earnings call from the network's new parent company Nexstar. The call revealed that the company intends to transition away from licensed series and toward making their own originals, so only a minimal amount of the currently running CW series - which includes Superman & Lois, Walker, and The Winchesters - will likely continue to air in the 2023-2024 season.

While Gunn's response to this particular fan was brusque and critical of the demanding nature of certain social media fan requests, it does not mean that he is not keeping the best interests of Arrowverse fans at heart. In a different recent Twitter thread, he shared that he and his co-CEO Peter Safran "are listening & open to everything as we embark on this journey." He also acknowledged that they have received a great many messages about the future of Legends of Tomorrow as well as other DC fan requests like an Ayer cut of Suicide Squad, the bulk of which have been respectful.

Should the continuation of the Arrowverse begin to seem like a viable financial option based on the volume of fan demand, it is entirely possible that shows including DC's Legends of Tomorrow could continue to exist in some form. However, it seems highly unlikely that they would continue to be a part of The CW's programming slate as that network continues to transition in a currently unknown new direction. Should the Arrowverse be resurrected in a new form, it seems probable that it would move to HBO Max, the streaming service that is also home to DC series like Gunn's own The Suicide Squad spinoff Peacemaker.
