Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for the Legends of Tomorrow season 7 finale.

The CW's time-traveling superhero series Legends of Tomorrow, which was recently canceled after seven seasons and a cliffhanger ending, deserves a true series finale. Thankfully, there is little to stop HBO Max from stepping in to revive the series for one final season or produce a Legends of Tomorrow movie to properly end their story. If nothing else, a comic book written by the series writers could also provide a proper sense of closure for the many Legends of Tomorrow fans who were disappointed by the cancellation.

The events of Legends of Tomorrow season 7 found the titular team trapped in the past, after their time-ship, the Waverider, was destroyed by another time-ship. Hilarity ensued as the Legends discovered their unseen enemy was a demented copy of the artificial intelligence Gideon, who had determined that the Legends were a threat to the natural order and had to die. Teaming with Dr. Gwyn Davies (Matt Ryan), the first scientist to build a working time machine, the Legends were able to retreat into the time stream but were still outgunned by the far more ruthless and powerful Evil Gideon.

This conflict culminated in the Legends of Tomorrow season 7 finale, where the Legends defeated Evil Gideon and claimed a rebuilt Waverider for themselves, only to lose their time-ship yet again after it was stolen by a man named Mike (Donald Faison). The episode ended with Mike returning to the Legends, seemingly feeling guilty over what he had done but really acting as bait for a trap. The agents of an unidentified law enforcement agency swooped in and arrested the Legends for time crimes, as it was revealed that Mike was the time-traveling superhero Booster Gold.

Why Legends Of Tomorrow Needs A Grand Finale

Despite the status of many long-running series on the CW being called into question in the wake of the network being put up for sale, Legends of Tomorrow had seemed a safe bet for renewal. While not one of the network's highest-rated shows, Legends of Tomorrow consistently attracted as many viewers as Kung Fu and more viewers than Riverdale, both of which were recently renewed for additional seasons. Legends of Tomorrow also enjoyed a steady increase in its ratings over the course of season 7 and was one of the few CW series to see its viewership rise in the past year.

Fans should be upset at the prospect of Legends of Tomorrow's season 7 cliffhanger ending never being resolved and the series joining a long line of science fiction shows that were canceled before their time with their stories unfinished. The global fan response to the cancellation was swift and powerful, with #RenewLegendsOfTomorrow trending on Twitter before and after the announcement. A number of fan petitions were also posted on Change.org, with the largest acquiring over 10,000 signatures after just one day. This sort of fan loyalty is not easily dismissed, and any network that chose to revive Legends of Tomorrow could expect to see their investment pay off big.

HBO Max Could Produce A Final Season Of Legends of Tomorrow

Thankfully, there is seemingly little standing in the way of HBO Max picking up the Legends of Tomorrow series and renewing it for one more season. The streaming service is owned by Warner Bros., which currently shares ownership of the CW network with ViacomCBS. It might take some legal negotiating to arrange the fine details, but this wouldn't be the first time that HBO Max acquired a DC Comics property created for another network and offered it another chance.

HBO Max picked up most of the original programming created for the short-lived DC Universe streaming service, including Doom Patrol and Young Justice, in the summer of 2020. HBO Max is also producing a number of original superhero series based upon the DC Comics universe, with Peacemaker proving to be one of the streamer's biggest successes. Legends of Tomorrow could easily join HBO Max's roster of original programming and thrive.

HBO Max Could Produce A Legends of Tomorrow Movie

Another possibility is that HBO Max could produce a Legends of Tomorrow or Booster Gold movie starring Donald Faison that could finish the series' story if a full season is unfeasible. Again, there is a precedent, with HBO Max currently producing animated movies based on the series Metalocalypse and The Venture Bros, which were both canceled with their stories unfinished. Both shows enjoy a large cult following comparable to the fanbase of Legends of Tomorrow. It is also worth noting that HBO Max is already producing small-scale superhero movies centered around Batgirl and the DCEU's Black Canary. A Legends of Tomorrow movie summing up the story of the Arrowverse's Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) would easily fit in among those plans.

An Earth-Prime Comic Could End The Legends' Story

Even if HBO Max should prove uninterested or unable to produce Legends of Tomorrow season 8 or a Legends of Tomorrow movie, it may not be the end for the cult classic sci-fi series. It is entirely possible that a comic book series could offer up a satisfying conclusion to the Legends' adventures, if not continue them for several virtual seasons. There is a long history of comic books based upon popular television series continuing the series' storylines when the networks were no longer interested in financing additional episodes. Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly are perhaps the most famous examples of this, but DC Comics did the same thing with Smallville Season 11, a comic book series that introduced Wonder Woman and Batman into the reality of the Smallville television series.

Coincidentally, the cancellation of Legends of Tomorrow came just days before the team was scheduled to make their comic book debut in Earth-Prime: Legends of Tomorrow #3. Set in the Arrowverse and written by the same writers responsible for scripting the various CW superhero series, Earth-Prime is spinning a crossover epic that could not be filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The third chapter, by Legends of Tomorrow writers Lauren Fields and Daniel Park with art by Paul Pelletier and Andrew Hennessy, focuses upon several of the retired Legends as they set off in search of their missing friends after Dr. Nate "Steel" Heywood fails to show up for his and Dr. Ray "The Atom" Palmer's monthly Time Bro man-date. And it is set concurrent with the events of Legends of Tomorrow season 7. Due to release on May 3, 2022, the first Legends of Tomorrow comic book could set the stage for a continuation of the Legends' adventures in a new medium. While it might not be the grand finale fans might hope for, it would offer some sense of resolution.
