DC's Legends of Tomorrow may be a spinoff of the CW's Arrow and The Flash, but the series also stands apart, as it features a time-traveling team-up of characters from both of those shows. The pilot episode was split into two parts and premiered over the course of two weeks, and has so far been met with positive reviews (read ours here and here).
Legends of Tomorrow sees an ensemble cast from the CW's two other DC shows brought together by time-traveler Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) to stop the immortal madman Vandal Savage (Casper Crump) from taking over the world. The cast has already proven themselves to have an oddball form of group chemistry and includes The Atom (Brandon Routh), White Canary (Caity Lotz), Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell), the two halves of Firestorm (Victor Garber and Franz Drameh), Hawk Man (Falk Hentschel), and Hawk Girl (Ciara Renée).
The show's ratings were strong for its premiere and held fast during the second week (via CBR), drawing 2.8 million viewers overall, dipping down one-tenth from its premiere. Legends of Tomorrow won a 1.1/4 share of the 18-49 demographic and took second place for the Thursday night 8 p.m. time slot among men aged 18-34. It remains to be seen if the show can keep it up, but such a strong early showing seems to indicate that the CW did its job well in building anticipation for this spinoff of two of its most popular shows.
Now that the first stages of Legends of Tomorrow's world-building is complete, fans can look forward to seeing how creators Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, Andrew Kreisberg, and showrunner Phil Klemmer spin the potentially unwieldy premise into a weekly offering, which compels audiences to keep returning. To that end, we have a series of promotional stills from the show's third episode 'Blood Ties.'
Check out the stills below and then read a synopsis for the upcoming episode (via CBM):
"SNART VISITS HIS PAST; STEIN AND RAY TEAM UP — Rip (Arthur Darvill) decides to weaken Vandal Savage (Casper Crump) by going after his financial assets. Rip and Sara (Caity Lotz) infiltrate Savage’s bank, but are discovered by his men. Meanwhile, Snart (Wentworth Miller) and Rory (Dominic Purcell) talk Jax (Franz Drameh) into taking the jump ship back to Central City so they can steal a valuable emerald. Professor Stein (Victor Garber) guides Ray (Brandon Routh) on a dangerous mission."
With so many characters to keep track of, get used to having a lot going on in Legends of Tomorrow, as the next episode's synopsis proves. Captain Cold and Heat Wave are clearly looking out for themselves, Sara Lance and Rip Hunter seem to be growing close as they go after Savage's financial interests as the immortal villain himself appears to get his hands on Hawkman at some point in the episode. Add in yet another subplot involving Professor Stein and Ray Palmer, and we have a series packed with characters who will constantly need something substantial to do from week to week. The show has provided plenty of satisfactory storylines for the ensemble so far, but it is only two episodes old.
Legends of Tomorrow will return with ‘Blood Ties’ on February 4th, 2016 at 8pm on The CW.
