[WARNING - This article contains SPOILERS for Legends of Tomorrow.]
Legends of Tomorrow saw a strong start from its two-part pilot, with ratings remaining high from one week to the next. It's a promising start, too, managing to bring together a team of heroes and villains for a time-travelling adventure to save the world and not trip all over itself in a muddled mess. There's a lot going on in Legends of Tomorrow, but never does the show struggle under the weight of so many characters and subplots.
It also helps that Legends of Tomorrow is willing to lose a character or two -- like the dearly departed Hawkman, Carter Hall, who was shockingly murdered by Vandal Savage during the climax of last week's episode. Carter's death has now united these legends-to-be against Savage, but it's obviously being taken the hardest by Hawkgirl, Kendra Saunders, who only just began to recall their many past lives together.
Even though Carter's time in this life is over, Legends of Tomorrow will continue exploring his and Kendra's connection, as executive producer Phil Klemmer explained in an interview with TV Guide:
"What we're going to explore in our show is her gradually remembering all the lives they had together in various time periods and how they inform this life, how everything she's learned in her 208 deaths will give her the strength and power and knowledge on how to not fail this time, when she will ultimately confront Vandal Savage."
There's the advantage in having characters with past lives: plenty of opportunity for flashbacks (and we know how much The CW superhero shows love their flashbacks). These flashbacks sound as if they'll work like training sessions, with Kendra learning some vital bit of information or skill she needs to defeat Savage each time she remembers one of those 208 lives. No doubt she'll also be reminded of all those pesky past feelings she has for Carter, but that should only further her resolve to destroy Savage. And who knows, she may see him alive again. It wouldn't be too surprising to see one of Carter's past -- or even future -- lives return in the flesh. They are traveling in a time machine, after all.
On the other hand, with Carter out of the picture for this lifetime, Kendra could resume her budding romance with Cisco free of those weird, past life/destined-lover entanglements. Then again, learning your heart is forever promised to a man who a version of you from the past fell in love with isn't all that easy to shake off, as Klemmer says:
"You can imagine, should Kendra embark on a present-day romance story with someone aboard our ship or someone beyond our ship, that would really complicate things. You meet the guy you're destined to fall in love with over the past 4,000 years, that seems like a pretty juicy love triangle that we'd like to get to some day."
The Flash's Cisco Ramon is thought to have an upcoming guest appearance on Legends of Tomorrow, which could very well offer hints of renewed flirtation between the two. Besides, what CW show could ever let the chance for a juicy love triangle, no matter how weird, to pass them by?
Legends of Tomorrow will return with ‘Blood Ties’ on February 4th, 2016 at 8pm on The CW.
