The upcoming sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was given an official title and release date during today's Nintendo Direct stream. The 2017 open-world fantasy game received universal acclaim upon release for its open-ended game design and unique atmosphere. Earlier this year Nintendo delayed Zelda: BOTW 2 to Spring 2023, and now fans have a firm release date for the highly anticipated title.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild gave fans a fascinating fresh take on the long-running Nintendo fantasy series. Rather than having players progress through a linear series of areas and dungeons, BOTW gives players the freedom to choose how and where to progress Link's quest. Most of the game's content can be completed in any order, and there are multiple ways to conquer each individual objective throughout the journey. Following the game's massive success, Nintendo quickly announced that a Zelda: Breath of the WIld sequel was in the works. Fans have long speculated about the official title of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, and this speculation has now come to an end.

A breathtaking new trailer, posted to YouTube by Nintendo, revealed the official title of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom during today's September 2022 Nintendo Direct. The fantasy epic's exact release date of May 12, 2023 was also announced during the event. The exciting trailer begins with a series of temple engravings, which seem to depict the invasion of Hyrule and Link's quest to rescue Zelda. The iconic hero is then seen sprinting and leaping from a floating island before landing on the back of a flying mechanical creature, with gameplay footage showing him solving puzzles and climbing massive tree roots.

The Legend of Zelda Takes To The Skies

Previous trailers have already shown off the floating islands in Zelda: BOTW 2, though the game's plot still remains unclear. However, the official title of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom may provide some brand-new insight into the upcoming title's fantasy storyline. Breath of the Wild presented players with a post-apocalyptic version of Hyrule, so perhaps the upcoming sequel will focus on rebuilding the fractured kingdom to its former glory. The floating islands may be an important piece of this puzzle, since they seem to be broken up into fragments rather than forming a coherent sky region.

Fans have been wildly anticipating the title of BOTW 2, and now the project has been official revealed as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The title mirrors Breath of the Wild, while also teasing an entirely new focus for Nintendo's next open-world adventure. As revealed during today's Nintendo Direct, fans will be able to experience The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom when it releases on May 12, 2023.
