The Legend of Zelda is often set in Hyrule, which has been ruled by the Hyrule Royal Family for centuries, with Princess Zelda herself being the most recognizable figure from the family. There are instances in the history of Hyrule, however, that might leave players questioning why the royal family is still in power. Even when they make mistakes that harm their subjects, the Hyrule Royal Family keeps an unwavering hold on its power.

Aside from Princess Zelda, members of the Hyrule Royal Family don't make many appearances in the Zelda games. In several cases, this is because Zelda and her father, the King, seem to be the only living members of the family left at the time the game takes place. Princess Zelda as Tetra in Wind Waker helps Link as much as possible, but there are times in Hyrule's history that the royals didn't do as much as they should have to help their subjects.

Hyrule’s Royal Family Reverted Progress Before The Events Of BOTW

Thousands of years before the events of Breath of the Wild, the Sheikah were an advanced population whose technology was turned away by the Hyrule Royal Family. The Sheikah themselves were sent into exile, and as a result, very few people in the present understand how the technology left behind works. The loss of Sheikah technology sent the people of Hyrule back to a state similar to medieval serfdom, and advancements could have potentially been made to aid against Calamity Ganon, despite his control over the Guardians in the Second Great Calamity.

The Divine Right Of The Hyrule Royal Family In Zelda

Passed from her mother to Zelda in Breath of the Wild, the royal women are the only ones with the power to seal Calamity Ganon when he returns. This ability makes it difficult for the subjects of the royal family to oppose their positions of power since there will be a heavy reliance on the queen or princess when Calamity Ganon returns. Another element that gives the Hyrule Royal Family a divine right to rule is revealed in Skyward Sword: Zelda is the mortal incarnation of the Goddess Hylia. It's difficult to argue against the rule of a living goddess.

The Hyrule Royal Family has held power over Hyrule for a long time, but that doesn't mean they haven't made mistakes for which their subjects had to pay. While the title of queen should be passed onto Princess Zelda in Tears of the Kingdom, she'll have a lot to fix after the damage caused by Calamity Ganon, and she would likely continue the restoration work that started while she was sealed away. However, she could choose to pay the rule to somebody else and end the reign of the Hyrule Royal Family in The Legend of Zelda.
