Link is the iconic protagonist of The Legend Of Zelda series, but does he have a surname? The Legend Of Zelda is one of Nintendo's most enduring franchises, ranking alongside the similarly long-running Metroid or Super Mario games. The first entry arrived in 1986 and every instalment follows Link, a young warrior questing his way through the fantasy kingdom of Hyrule. While the series timeline is famously something of a tangled mess, with the franchise comprised of prequels, reboots and spinoffs that often seem to follow their own continuity.

Regardless of timeline shenanigans, the one constant of the series is stellar games. Some of the highest-rated entries included The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past, the N64's Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time and 2017's acclaimed The Breath Of The Wild. The only real black mark against the series is a trio of terrible games for the CD-i format in the early 1990s, including The Legend Of Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon, but these titles tend to be ignored by the fanbase as Nintendo had little direct involvement in their creation. While a live-action Zelda movie or TV show has yet to happen, an animated series from Castlevania producer Adi Shankar is in the works.

The Legend Of Zelda's Link has little in the way or dialogue in any of the games, and the character's creator Shigeru Miyamoto once explained the name itself was from the original concept for the first game, as it was supposed to take place in both the past and the future with Link literally being the link between them. Link is also the only name he's ever been known by until Miyamoto and producer Eiji Aonuma provided his full name to Game Informer in 2017.

According to Shigeru Miyamoto, his full name is Link Link. This ties back to the infamous 1993 Super Mario Bros movie, which featured a scene revealing Mario's surname is Mario, making him Mario Mario and his brother Luigi Mario. Miyamoto later explained this made him laugh so to his mind that is their actual surnames. However, he really just thinks of them as Mario and Luigi, and this is likely the same deal with The Legend Of Zelda's Link.

In other words, it's doubtful any future entries will actually have a character call him Link Link. The next Legend Of Zelda will be a sequel to Breath Of The Wild, though a release date has yet to be confirmed by Nintendo. Likewise, there are no current updates on when fans can expect the new animated series either.
