Few series loom as large in gaming as The Legend Of Zelda, and each game in the franchise offers up new versions of classic recurring characters like series stars Link, Zelda, and Ganon. However, each game also brings its own unique new characters to the table. While some of these characters, like Ocarina Of Time's Sheik and Breath Of The Wild's Prince Sidon, garner a lot of attention, others are arguably underappreciated.

Whether it's recurring characters that simply fade into the background or one-off characters who don't get their due, these characters deserve a little love, too. And while they may not realize it on their first or second playthrough, these are the kinds of characters that players will hopefully grow to appreciate over time.

Kaepora Gaebora

Kaepora Saying Goodbye

The helpful owl form of ancient sage Rauru, Kaepora Gaebora gets a bad rap from much of the Zelda fandom for his very long spiels about how to play the game that many players accidentally repeat due to Kaepora suddenly asking the player whether they want to hear those tips again.

However, fans are undervaluing Kaepora Gaebora, as he is an invaluable resource for new players who just wants to help Link navigate the often daunting kingdom of Hyrule. Plus, his patterning that makes him look like he has a second face under his beak is beautiful to look at, even if you have to look at it for a long time because he's on his third monologue.

Maple & Syrup

Maple After Crashing Into Link And Syrup At Her Cauldron

Series mainstay Syrup appears in a number of Zelda games, while her daughter Maple is unique to the Oracle games, as well as the Game Boy Advance rerelease of A Link To The Past. However, neither character seems to get much love. This mother-daughter witch duo is notable for their classic witchy getup and their unique roles in Link's journey.

Syrup typically sells potions to Link and sometimes asks for his help in finding an ingredient for her. Maple is a bit more mischievous, bumping into Link occasionally and triggering a situation where the player will have to gather their dropped items while also snagging some of Maple's. These witches deserve their due from fans and perhaps even a mother-daughter reunion in the future.

Twinrova (Kotake and Koume)

Twinrova Combined Form Looking Down

Many Zelda fans know Ganon, Skull Kid, and even King Ghirahim. Recurring villains Kotake and Koume (aka the Twinrova), however, don't get as much attention from players. Appearing as villains in Ocarina Of Time and the Oracle games, the Twinrova are known as tough bosses who can fight as separate witches on broomsticks or one combined warrior.

However, that's not the entirety of the Twinrova's presence in the Zelda series. In Majora's Mask, the fire- and ice-wielding sisters appear as allies to Link, with Kotake owning a potion shop and Koume offering a cruise that Link can take. Although it's been a while since players have seen the Twinrova in a new adventure, they're classic villains (and allies) that deserve more love.

Guru-Guru

Guru Guru Playing His Organ Grinder Angrily

This musician plays his organ grinder in a number of Zelda games, first appearing in the windmill in Ocarina Of Time, where he gets mad at Adult Link for the actions of his young counterpart. That said, most of the time Guru-Guru is a happy-go-lucky guy who is glad to help Link out.

In addition to giving Link items and tools in exchange for completing quests (or just chatting), of course, Guru-Guru's name is simply addictive to say. His musical skills are admirable, as well, and although he can be freaky when angered, Guru-Guru could have a bigger spot in fans' hearts for his uniqueness alone.

Ezlo

Ezlo Jumping Off Links Head And Exclaiming

Today, The Minish Cap has been forgotten by many casual and newer players of the Zelda franchise, and its unique take on the companion role, filled by characters like Navi and Midna, has gotten lost in the mix. Ezlo, the Minish sage who was transformed into Link's cap by Vaati, doesn't get his due among other memorable companions in Link's adventures.

Shaped like Link's triangle cap with a bird's head on the pointy end, Ezlo is a wise, grumpy old man who guides and scolds Link throughout his size-changing adventure. His endearing aggression makes Ezlo a funny and unique companion for Link, and his cap form is ridiculously cute, concealing his serious side.

Batreaux

Batreaux Standing Menacingly

Batreaux is a terrifying demon from Skyward Sword who deserves to be talked about for his spooky design if nothing else. What makes him especially deserving of more appreciation, though, is the fact that his daunting exterior hides a friendly personality and a desire to be human.

This innocent wish, as well as his adorable friendship with a young girl named Kukiel who is one of the few humans unafraid of Batreaux, make it difficult not to fall in love with this demon and sympathize with his plight. It doesn't hurt that he provides Link with plenty of rewards for helping him achieve his dream.

Salvatore

Salvatore Sitting Bored At His Counter

Appearing in The Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass, Salvatore may be known to players for the fun, pirate-themed minigames he runs, using cardboard cutouts to explain the rules. However, many players may not remember just how fun of a character Salvatore is.

Salvatore isn't only a source for Link and the player let off a little steam by pausing the big adventure for some lighthearted fun, but he's also a very relatable character who seems pretty uninterested in his work until he gets to put on his little cardboard-cutout pirate plays. He may not be a big presence in the Zelda franchise, but Salvatore's personality alone should be enough to win his way into players' hearts.

Saria

Saria Sitting On A Tree Stump Playing Ocarina

One of the most prominent Kokiri from Ocarina Of Time, Saria is an early friendly face for Link on his journey through Hyrule and later through time. Although Link can call Saria at any time by playing her song on the ocarina and despite the fact that she later becomes the Forest Sage, Saria doesn't play a huge role in Link's adventure.

Link, however, will never forget his friendship with Saria, and neither should fans. Saria has all the makings of a recurring character in the vein of guide Impa or merchant Beedle, who have both appeared in multiple forms over the years. For now, though, fans can only revisit her in Ocarina Of Time, her time in the series all too brief.

Dampé

Dampe Digging A Grave In Front Of Link And Navi

Considering the fact that this kindly gravekeeper appears in six Zelda titles, he gets comparatively little fanfare from the franchise and from fans. Despite his imposing and somewhat scary appearance, Dampé is very friendly towards Link and often needs help dealing with the monsters and ghosts that keep him from his work.

Dampé is also known for living in a shack that recurs throughout his many appearances, as a somewhat comforting place where Link can go to see a friendly face. Despite all that Dampé offers, though, he is not always well-remembered. Hopefully, with more appearances to come, he can have his breakout moment.

Linebeck

Linebeck Facing The Camera Introducing Himself

The Wind Waker gave fans several iconic Zelda characters that are fairly well-loved and well-remembered, including Beedle and Tetra. However, Phantom Hourglass, the follow-up to Wind Waker's unique aesthetic and seafaring gameplay, introduced a new character who has been left behind: Linebeck.

A treasure-hunting sea captain who acts as Link's companion for the Nintendo DS title, Linebeck has garnered a decent degree of popularity among fans. He is held back, however, by the fact that he only appears in one game (although his grandson Linebeck III appears in Spirit Tracks, as well), and many new fans are not familiar with this swarthy sea captain and his charms. Perhaps a remaster of Phantom Hourglass or a new entry that sees Link taking to the seas could be an opportunity for Linebeck to return.
