Selma Blair addresses a potential return as Vivian for Legally Blonde 3. Released in 2001, Legally Blonde helped to solidify Reese Witherspoon as a Hollywood icon for her portrayal of sorority girl turned Harvard Law student, Elle Woods. Directed by Robert Luketic, Legally Blonde follows Elle’s journey as she enrolls in Harvard to win back her boyfriend, Warner, only to discover he’s engaged to the antithesis of Elle, Vivian Kensington (Blair).

Upon its initial release, Legally Blonde dominated the box office and quickly became a cult classic. Following its success, the cleaver comedy spawned a sequel, Legally Blonde: Red, White & Blonde. Focusing on the next chapter of Elle’s life as she tackles a career in Washington, the sequel saw the return of Elle’s best friend Paulette (Jennifer Coolidge) and fiance Emmett (Luke Wilson) but didn’t feature or mention Vivian. In 2018, Witherspoon announced she would don Elle’s pink wardrobe once more for a third installment. Written by Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor, Legally Blonde 3 has been delayed since its initial release date of May 2022.

For now, it remains to be seen who will reprise their roles from the original film in Legally Blonde 3. Despite plot details being kept under wraps by Kaling, Witherspoon recently teased that the long-awaited sequel will feature Coolidge's return as Paulette in a significant role. As it stands, Kaling has doled out hints at what Elle audiences can expect, previously stating that Legally Blonde 3 will explore Elle Woods in her 40s and acknowledge changes in the world since the debut of the first film. Given all this, it's entirely possible that Blair's wish to return as Vivian will come to fruition.

Legally Blonde 3 is likely to be the final chapter of Elle's journey on screen, and Vivian making a return would be a heartwarming reunion for the the characters after their days at Harvard. Indeed, Legally Blonde 3 has a lot to tackle in the life of Elle Woods two decades later, including how she maintained friendships with Paulette and Vivian, and her relationship with Wilson's Emmett. For now, Legally Blonde 3 is awaiting a finished script, but the creative forces behind the film are making sure it will be worth the wait.
