The producers of upcoming comedy Legally Blonde 3 would love Luke Wilson to return to the franchise. The first Legally Blonde movie was first released back in 2001, with stars Reece Witherspoon and Selma Blair recently celebrating its 20th anniversary with a series of behind-the-scenes photos. Legally Blonde followed a valley girl and sorority sister, Elle Woods (Witherspoon), who attends Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend. The comedy became something of a sleeper-hit, making $141 million against a production budget of $18 million.

Based on the novel of the same name by Amanda Brown, Legally Blonde was directed by Robert Luketic. The movie was anchored by a strong supporting cast including Blair, Victor Garber, Jennifer Coolidge, Ali Larter, and Luke Wilson as Emmett Richmond. The movie led to a 2003 sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, as well as a spinoff entitled Legally Blondes. In October 2020, MGM announced that Legally Blonde 3 will be released in 2022, and there has been speculation about who might appear in the movie, with Witherspoon confirming her involvement.

With Legally Blonde 3's debut announced, the movie's producers have said they would like Wilson to return to the franchise and reprise his role as Emmett. In an interview with THR, MGM’s Pamela Abdy once again confirmed that the movie is happening and is in the pre-production stage, and that the studio "hopes" Wilson will return. When asked about the Old School actor reprising his role, Abdy was quoted as saying:

"It’s definitely our hope that he will return when we are ready to make it."

The plot of Legally Blonde 3 is not yet known, and, as far as we know, there is no completed script yet, but writer Mindy Kaling revealed Legally Blonde 3 sees Elle Woods at 40. Witherspoon is on board as a producer, and may have a hand in the creative process, whilst it has also been confirmed that first-time director Jamie Suk will helm the project, from a screenplay penned by Dan Goor, Karen McCullah (who wrote the first movie), and The Office star Kaling. Jennifer Coolidge and Jessica Cauffiel are also set to return for the project, but there is nothing confirmed surrounding Wilson yet.

However, the 50-year-old, who also appeared in Charlie's Angels, has stated in interviews that he would be open to the idea of returning for Legally Blonde 3. In a previous interview the actor said, that "of course" he'd take up the opportunity to be in the film, but that he "didn't know" anything about the project yet. This would suggest that no formal approach has been made to Wilson yet to get him on board, but the fact that he seems willing and open to returning will be just what fans want to hear. With two projects in post-production, Wilson might have a window in his schedule to return for Legally Blonde 3, so audiences can get a glimpse into what Elle and Emmett are up to now.
