Luke Wilson revealed that he would return for Legally Blonde 3 if his co-star and on-screen wife Reese Witherspoon asked him to. The popular film franchise has been greenlit for yet another sequel which will further explore the story of Elle Woods, her friends, and the relationships that have been the basis for the beloved film series since its 2001 debut. The movie was also the basis for a popular Broadway musical that made its debut in 2007 and continues to tour in theaters around the United States.

Legally Blonde centered on Elle Wood's enrollment in Harvard Law School as she tried to win her boyfriend back after a breakup. In the 2003 sequel, Woods headed to Washington, DC to fight for animal rights and fell hard for lawyer Emmett Richmond (Wilson). In the second installment, Wilson was also a teacher's assistant for Professor Callahan at Harvard Law. Legally Blonde 3 will have a script penned by The Office star Mindy Kaling, and its return was announced by Witherspoon via an Instagram post in June 2018, where she was seen floating on a pool lounge and wearing the character's iconic pink bikini.

Wilson responded to questions about reprising his Legally Blonde 2 role while on a promotional tour for his new film 12 Mighty Orphans. He told People Magazine he would be up for revisiting the character of Emmett and his part in the franchise if Witherspoon asked him to return to the cast. Although the actor couldn't give any definitive confirmation about his participation in the project, he certainly seemed excited about the idea.

"Yeah. I'm always up to work with Reese again. We'll just have to see what happens.  I'll watch it when I see it on cable, and it's on cable a lot. But just because Reese is always so funny in the movie to me. So I always watch a few things just because I like her portrayal of Elle Woods so much."

In Legally Blonde 2, Emmett bonded with Elle over her skills as an attorney and looked past her pink, Barbie-doll exterior to see the kind, dedicated advocate she had become for the voiceless. Together they fought to outlaw animal testing and rose about their differences to wed in a pink-themed ceremony. Their future ended on an uncertain note after Emmett asked his new wife where she wanted to live: Boston, New York City, or Washington D.C. She did not answer as she looked toward The White House. This plot point could be expanded in Legally Blonde 3 if the writers decided to go that route.

The future of Legally Blonde 3 remains uncertain, but recent reports have the newest film set for a 2022 release. Wilson's participation in the movie, which was scheduled to begin filming in 2020, remains uncertain. Fans are hopeful the actor will rejoin the circle of Witherspoon's on-camera relationships and provide the necessary foil for the beloved heroine. Hopefully, Wilson does end up returning for the sequel, as Legally Blonde 3 would certainly benefit from his addition. If he doesn't return however, the movie will have to find a way to write the character out since Emmett and Elle were together the last time fans saw them.
