If Legacies season 5 had happened, the series would have introduced the daughter of two major characters from The Vampire DiariesLegacies is the second spinoff from the universe of The Vampire Diaries, which is adapted from the L.J. Smith young adult novel series of the same name and originally began airing on The CW in 2009. Following the events of the series finale of the first spinoff The OriginalsLegacies follows the students and staff of the Salvatore School, an educational institution for the supernaturally gifted. The show's cast includes Danielle Rose Russell, Jenny Boyd, Kaylee Bryant, Quincy Fouse, Aria Shahghasemi, Peyton Alex Smith, Chris Lee, Leo Howard, Ben Levin, and The Vampire Diaries' Matthew Davis.

In the middle of the run of Legacies season 4, the show fell victim to a huge swath of cancellations at The CW, which also saw the end of popular long-running shows like Riverdale and DC's Legends of Tomorrow. Luckily, the show's creators were given advanced warning that this may be the case, so they were able to construct a suitable ending for the season 4 finale, which had now become the finale of the entire series. This included two major cameos from the Vampire Diaries universe: a spectral visit from lead character Hope Mikaelson's deceased father Klaus (Joseph Morgan), and the return of Caroline Forbes (Candice King), who is in a relationship with the Salvatore School's headmaster Alaric Saltzman but had not yet appeared on Legacies.

Speaking with TVLineLegacies creator Julie Plec revealed part of their scrapped plan for season 5. Had the show been allowed to move forward, it would have properly introduced Stephanie Salvatore, the daughter of two of The Vampire Diaries' lead characters: Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). Plec said that her inclusion was "very much at the top of our whiteboard." Read her full quote below:

[Stephanie was] very much at the top of our white board as a character that we were planning on introducing, should the show move forward.

In my mind, Damon and Elena had kids in our timeline. The way we alluded to her in the genie episode was as though she was 12 or 13. But in the Legacies timeline, their kids were younger, probably toddlers.

Stephanie Salvatore is a character who so far has been viewed as non-canonical. She was glimpsed as a tween during the events of a season 1 episode when a genie opened up an alternate universe, but Plec has stated that the real Stephanie in the Legacies timeline would be quite different. They would have had to integrate her by either doing "a time jump or [playing] with time in some way" so they could get her to interact with a "teenage Pedro."

This continued connection to its parent franchise would have certainly thrilled Legacies fans, had that season come to fruition. While the two Vampire Diaries cameos they got in the finale were certainly satisfying, a more slow-burn approach that allowed the universe to expand even more would have been preferable. However, Plec may have the opportunity to bring Stephanie to life in a new series, as she is currently in talks with The CW for further iterations of the Vampire Diaries universe.
