Caution: Spoilers ahead for Legacies season 4.

Legacies proved that Landon is more than capable of being the next Bonnie of the Vampire Diaries universe—or maybe something even better. The CW show continues the story of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals as the latest installment of a TV franchise full of Gen-Z vampires, witches, wizards, and werewolves. The descendants of history's biggest myths are trained to control their powers at the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted, where they also face off against the more relatable problems of teenage life.

Even though Landon Kirby was killed by Hope Mikaelson in one of the most emotional moments of season 4, with Legacies it’s never that simple. In season 4 episode 9 (“I Can’t Be the One to Stop You”) Landon is still existing in Limbo, the space between the worlds of life and death. Dissatisfied with simply moving on to the next world, Landon has picked up the habit of helping other souls move on instead. He acts as both guide and consultant to the newly dead so that they can get past the emotional blocks of the posthumous process. Thanks to Landon, they can get the closure they need to find peace as they pass on to the afterlife.

Landon’s new role as death-whisperer on Legacies is similar to Bonnie’s in The Vampire Diaries. In that series, there was a time during which Bonnie became the “anchor” which held together the worlds of the living and the “other side” where dead supernatural beings reside. Every creature that died passed through Bonnie. Though she helped creatures find peace, the process caused her pain. Legacies is giving Landon the same chance to be an anchor for the dead and to do it in a better, painless way.

Landon, unlike Bonnie, has always toed the line between the living and the dead. As a half-human/half-phoenix, rising from the dead is literally in Landon's blood. While he may still be stuck as a spirit in limbo, Landon can't help rising from the metaphorical "death" of stagnation into the "new life" of helping others.

Landon’s journey on Legacies has been a roller-coaster. He’s always had a strange relationship with death. Now that he’s dead, he seems to have found a groove that suits him. It’s definitely a lot better than Bonnie’s experience in The Vampire Diaries. Landon might find more peace moving on completely, but that’s never really been his style. Legacies may have killed Landon off, but he will always find a way to stay relevant. It's who he is.
