Ethan Hawke has been cast in Leave The World Behind, joining Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali in the Netflix thriller. The upcoming film is based on Rumaan Alam’s novel of the same name, which was a finalist for the 2020 National Book Award. Leave The World Behind will follow two families who are forced together in a weekend rental home amidst a mysterious power outage, unable to access the outside world.

Now, Deadline reports that Hawke has joined the star-studded Leave The World Behind movie cast. He will play the role of Roberts’ husband and father of the characters' two children. Other newly announced cast members include Myha’la Herrold, who will play Ali’s daughter, and Ryan Kiera Armstrong and Charlie Evans, who have been cast as Hawke and Roberts’ children.

The film will be adapted and directed by Sam Esmail, who is best known for creating series Mr. Robot, starring Rami Malek. In addition to starring, Roberts is set to executive produce alongside Esmail, Alam, and Chad Hamilton. Ali joined Leave The World Behind in September 2021, when it was announced that he would replace original star Denzel Washington. Leave The World Behind marks yet another highly-anticipated project for Hawke in 2022. The in-demand actor recently wrapped production as the villain in Marvel’s Moon Knight. Hawke will also appear in Robert Eggers’ The Northman, and in a cameo appearance in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out 2. Leave the World Behind seems to be continuing the actors' current theme of dark and mysteriously-toned projects, which he has always pulled off with great talent.
