Facebook groups are a great option for users wanting to be part of a like-minded community, but joining too many groups can overwhelm people with a torrent of irrelevant notifications. Fortunately, Facebook offers an easy way to leave groups. The method applies to all kinds of Facebook groups, including 'Open' groups that can be joined by anyone with a Facebook account, 'Closed' groups that require approval from a group admin or an invitation to join, and 'Secret' groups where new members can only be added via invitations from current members.

Over time, many Facebook groups often become ghost towns or the user can become disinterested in the subject. Users can also become part of an unwanted Facebook group without their knowledge. Depending on their privacy settings, friends might add them to random groups, including those that spread misinformation or hate speech. Irrespective of the type of group a user is a part of, they can easily leave.

Facebook users can leave a group either via the mobile app or the website. To leave a Facebook group using the mobile app, first tap on the hamburger menu (three parallel lines) in the top-right corner on Android and bottom-right on iOS. On the next screen, select 'Groups' and then tap on 'Your Groups' to see the full list of subscribed groups. From there, the user will have to scroll down (if needed) and select the group they want to leave. Once on the homepage of the target group, tap on the three-dot menu button in the top-right corner, select 'Leave group' and confirm the selection. At this stage, users will also get the option to report the group to Facebook if they believe it is inappropriate or harmful in any way.

Leaving Groups Could Clean Up Notification Clutter

Facebook users can also leave a group via the website. To do this on a computer, click on the 'Groups' option in the left sidebar on the homepage. Users will then need to scroll down and select the group they want to leave. Once on the group's homepage, click on the three-dot menu button in the top-right and select 'Leave group'. Finally, confirm the choice to leave that group for good. To do it from a mobile browser, open the News Feed, tap Main Menu and then on Groups. Tap Groups again, select the group, tap Joined and then select Leave Group to complete the process.

Once a user leaves a group, they will be removed from the group's member list and the group will be removed from the list of groups they have joined. For reference, none of the members in a group are notified if another member leaves that group. As for the person leaving the group, they will no longer receive notifications or see posts from the group in their news feed. This can help to clear up notification clutter and help users move away from a toxic environment, especially when groups go awry and start spreading hate speech and/or misinformation.
