Many details around the upcoming A League of Their Own reboot series remain sketchy. Amazon announced in 2020 that it will be transforming the classic 1992 sports film into a streaming series, with the project set to hit the small screen this year. Like the original movie, the series will tell the story of a woman's baseball team in World War II, but with a new cast and creative team.

1992's A League of Their Own starred Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, and a strong supporting cast. The film was loosely based on the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which existed from 1943 to 1954. The movie received a positive commercial response and grossed $132.4 million. It is today remembered as a classic, with Amazon capitalizing on this memory to create an original series for its Prime Video service.

This will actually be the second TV adaptation of A League of Their Own, following a short-lived CBS series in 1993. The series has been in development in some form since 2017, and is a passion project for creators Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham. While it's still unclear when exactly Amazon's A League of Their Own will be available, here is all the information available about the show.

Is The League Of Their Own Show Connected To The Movie?

A League Of Their Own

The upcoming A League of Their Own series is inspired by the original movie, but not a direct remake or sequel. Similar to other recent reboots like How I Met Your Father, the series will have the same basic premise as the original movie but feature new characters and actors. Like the original, the new A League of Their Own will be based on the real Rockford Peaches, who were the AAGPBL's most dominant team.

A League Of Their Own Cast Details

In addition to co-creating the reboot series, Broad City star Abbi Jacobson will also star in it as Carson Shaw. Other main cast members include Chante Adams, D'Arcy Carden, Roberta Colindrez, and Nick Offerman, while actors including Melanie Field, Kate Berlant, and Nat Faxon are confirmed for recurring roles. There will be at least some representation of the original A League of Their Own cast, as Rosie O'Donnell will make a guest appearance as a lesbian bartender.

A League Of Their Own Story

Amazon promotional material has said the A League of Their On reboot "follows brand-new characters and begins with the formation of the league in 1943 and follows the league and its players as they fight to keep it alive through close games, injuries, sexual awakenings and road trips across a rapidly changing U.S." This description, as well as the diverse cast, suggests that the new series will deal with a broader array of social issues than the original film, including the fact that the real AAGPBL was racially segregated much as men's professional baseball was at the time.

A League Of Their Own Release Date Prediction

A League of Their Own is expected to be one of Amazon Prime Video's 2022 premieres, although an exact release date has not been announced yet. The series completed filming in 2021, so a date in the second half of 2022 would seem most likely. The series will consist of one-hour episode, although an exact season length or release schedule has yet to be announced. While there's always dangers in rebooting such a well-remembered film, the creative talent behind the upcoming A League of Their Own suggests that it may both expand upon and do justice to the original.
