League of Legends is receiving its second moody samurai with the release of the game's newest champion, Yone (yo-nay). Brother to Yasuo, the premier swordsman of Summoner's Rift, Yone brings an alternative, though not dissimilar playstyle to players looking to spend their time mastering the blade.

Yone is a mobile melee attack-damage caster/assassin like his brother. Though it remains to be seen where Yone will fit into the meta, it's safe to say that mid-laners who are fond of the in-and-out, high-damage playstyle of Yasuo will find themselves right at home with Yone. This guide will get players familiar with Yone's abilities and started on the path to slicing up the trolls in /all chat with two katanas in hand.

Yone's Abilities in League of Legends

League of Legends Yone Trailer

Passive: Way of the Hunter - Yone uses two blades, causing every second attack to deal more damage. His critical strike chance is also doubled but his critical strikes deal reduced damage.

Players will recognize both components of Yone's passive, as they can be seen in practice with Sett and Yasuo. Sett shares the capability to deal increased damage on every second hit of his auto attacks, and Yasuo also has doubled crit-chance. This should make Yone's hybrid passive feel very familiar to players who have frequented both of his predecessors.

Q: Mortal Steel - Yone thrusts forward, dealing physical damage to opponents. On hit, he gains a stack of Gathering Storm. At two stacks, Yone can dash forward with a wave that makes enemies airborne.

Yone's Q is also remarkably similar to that of his brother Yasuo. This ability, like Yasuo's "Steel Tempest," is a straight-line skillshot that deals instant damage based on Yone's attack damage and functions much like a buffed up auto-attack. The differences between the two character's abilities lie in the third consecutive strikes. Unlike Yasuo, Yone's third use of his Q is a knock-up attached to a dash. This means that Yone's ability to chase enemies down is much more reliable than his counterpart. An additional bonus is that Yone can freely dash over walls to chase or escape from an enemy.

W: Spirit Cleave - Yone cleaves forward in a massive arc dealing a portion of the target's maximum health. After successfully hitting an enemy Yone also gains a temporary shield. The shield's power increases per champion struck.

This is where Yone and Yasuo's kits begin to diverge, as Yone's W is very straight forward. This ability is a large cone in front of Yone (a Yone Cone) that deals damage based on an enemy's maximum health. Yone then gains a shield based on how many champions he hit with the initial strike. Spirit Cleave is a defensive ability that requires Yone to be actively engaged in combat, so it lends itself to a very all-in playstyle if players want to get the most defensive value out of the ability.

E: Soul Unbound - Yone can enter his Spirit Form, gaining movement speed and leaving his body behind. When Yone's Spirit Form expires he'll snap back into his body and deal a percentage of all the damage he dealt while in Spirit Form.

Yone's most complex ability, though it is still relatively simple in practice. Yone splits his body into two, and players then control Yone's Spirit Form. Players deal and receive damage normally, and any damage done while in Spirit Form will mark enemies. Once the ability ends, the player instantly blinks back to Yone's body, and marked enemies will be dealt a portion of the damage they received from Yone's Spirit Form. This ability allows players to stick to an enemy and finish off kills with little risk to them. While there is still the risk of dying while in Spirit Form, a player can push deep into enemy lines to secure a kill and still guarantee an escape back to where they began - just make sure Yone's body is tucked away in a safe spot! This ability also looks fantastic with Yone's Spirit Blossom skin, which he will receive on release.

R: Fate Sealed - Yone strikes all enemies in his path, blinking behind the last enemy hit and knocking everyone airborne towards him.

In an act of pure, unadulterated "teleports behind you," Yone's ultimate does precisely that. Yone dashes forward, damaging every enemy champion he hits and teleports behind the last target, then pulls all enemies hit towards him. This ultimate is a very simple ability that adds more damage and mobility to Yone's kit. The ability is also able to jump over walls and can be used in a pinch to escape if needed.

Yone's addition to League of Legends is significant, as Riot Games realized they struck gold when they released Yasuo in 2013. Yasuo has remained one of the most popular champions in League in the seven years since his release, and it's apparent Riot wanted to take extra care in crafting a character to represent his brother. Yone is already a hit, making huge waves in the League community before he's even made his way off of the Public Beta Environment. Along with the re-release of the League of Legends game mode Nexus Blitz, Yone's release is sure to bring countless players to the Rift again, or perhaps even for the first time.

Overall, Yone's extreme amount of mobility and damage makes for yet another character destined to terrorize the Rift with katana(s) in hand. It also seems as though Yone will be more suited for newer players to pick up, as all of his abilities can forgive mistakes much more readily than his brother Yasuo's. On top of that, he's bound to be extremely adept at farming CS like his brother, giving new players yet another reason to pick up and try out Yone. Interestingly enough, Yone's kit synergizes very well with Yasuo's, as Yone can use his two knock-ups to enable Yasuo's ultimate. While it remains to be seen which lane Yone will inevitably call home, and how players will ultimately prefer to build him, it's already abundantly clear that players will be seeing Yone around the Rift for a long time to come.
