Kicking off its next event in League of Legends, Riot Games has unveiled the abilities of Akshan, the newest champion. League of Legends is on the cusp of its next major event, The Sentinels of Light. In lore, the Sentinels fight the forces of the undead coming from the Shadow Isles. Before the event began, the only known Sentinels in-game were Lucian and Senna.

Over the past year, League of Legends has grown its universe beyond the MOBA game. Legends of Runeterra and Teamfight Tactics are only the beginning of this expansion. Riot currently has an MMO, a fighting game and an animated series in the pipeline, with more projects potentially on the way. In addition, Riot has been working with Marvel to develop canonical comic stories to help flesh out its ever-expanding list of champions.

Joining the League of Legends as the 156th champion is Akshan, The Rogue Sentinel. Riot unveiled his new abilities on Twitter, and YouTuber Skin Spotlights has assembled all of the short videos. His kit screams mid or jungle, with a high amount of mobility and utility. First is his passive, Dirty Fighting, which grants a shield every three damaging hits, deals a burst of physical damage on the third hit, and grants movement speed if Akshan cancels the second attack after the burst. His Q is Avengerang, a skill shot boomerang that extends its range the more enemies are hit and which hits enemies again on return. This attack also reveals enemies struck. Akshan’s E is a Heroic Swing, a hook shot similar to Camille, that Akshan uses to swing around terrain on the map. It requires two casts to do the swing, which also causes Akshan to fire his gun at the nearest enemy. A third cast will cause Akshan to jump off in the cursor direction and fire another shot.

Akshan’s ultimate is Commeuppance, which locks on to an enemy champion, minion or structure and deals damage proportionate to the target’s missing health. Commeuppance can be cast while using Heroic Swing. A particularly noteworthy ability is his W, Going Rogue. Its passive ability allows Akshan to revive ally champions killed by Scoundrels, the marked enemies who killed an ally. Killing a Scoundrel also grants bonus gold. Scoundrels are tagged with the number of enemies killed in bars above their heads. Going Rogue’s active ability camouflages Akshan for a short duration or indefinitely when near terrain. While camouflaged, Akshan can see the trails of Scoundrels and gains bonus movement speed and mana regeneration when moving toward them.

Going Rogue has the potential to be one of the most powerful abilities in the game. Not only does it allow Akshan to camouflage indefinitely like Evelynn, track enemies like Warwick, and gain bonus gold like Pyke, but he can also potentially revive the entire team with one kill. The rest of his kit essentially turns Akshan into a hyper-mobile burst assassin that can execute enemies, revive allies, and shred ADCs.

Akshan could be at risk for getting banned in pro play should he release in his current state. This would be a shame, as he looks like a fun character, and his high mobility should make him quite enjoyable to play. Riot needs to be careful with his stats if it wants to keep him balanced. Fans will be able to see if they succeed on July 22nd.
