Riot Games has raised over $7 million for charity by releasing an all-new character skin for League of Legends. The entire $7 million will be donated to the company’s Social Impact Fund, which was started to promote equality in education, opportunity, and global citizenship.

League of Legends is one of the biggest multiplayer online battle arena games (or MOBAs) on the market. The game has been around since 2009, and has grossed over $1.75 billion by 2020 despite being free to play. Riot makes its revenue from in-game purchases and cosmetics, including multiple skins for the over 150 champions in the game. League of Legends is known as the world’s largest esport, with the game hosting over 12 competitive leagues, and Riot earns revenue from sponsors and streaming rights as well.

According to the official Riot Games Twitter page, players have raised over $7 million since the Elderwood Ornn 2020 Charity Skin was added to the game’s store. The champion skin was available from December up until January 11. The Elderwood Orrn skin was purchasable for 1,350 RP, which is around $10 per sale for the fund. The charity skin was bundled with all associated chromas, two exclusive emotes, a new border icon and a Playful Pup Emote which could be bought for 7,885 RP, which is roughly $50. All of the proceeds will be going to the Riot Games Social Impact Fund, and Riot is partnering up with ImpactAssests. This organization helps big-name donors such as Riot make the most of every dollar being donated, working to optimize the impact donations can make.

This is the highest amount that Riot has made by running a Charity item in the game’s store, beating out the previous record of $6 million from the Dawnbringer Karma skin. This is an amazing achievement for the League of Legends community, who has come together to raise the $7 million for a good cause. It was estimated that roughly three-quarters of a million members of the community participated in the fund. Millions of dollars have been raised in League of Legends for the Social Impact Fund since it was started in 2019.

This vast amount of money should go towards helping make the world a better place. Games should be contributing to charities such as this more often, since they make up a billion-dollar industry. Riot is setting a great example with League of Legends in trying to put back some of the money it has earned. Hopefully, this is only the beginning.
