Angie Harmon says she's open to revisiting the classic character of Abbie Carmichael on Law & Order. Harmon played Carmichael on Dick Wolf's long-running crime show from season 9 to season 11, acting alongside Sam Waterston's iconic DA Jack McCoy. Her character often found herself at odds with McCoy and the other members of the team, mainly due to her conservative views, but had a few moments where her political persuasion was budged, such as in season 9, episode 8 'The Punk,' where the testimony of someone she was prosecuting softened her hard edges.
Since appearing in Law & Order, which made her somewhat of a household name, she had a brief period where she appeared in a few films. This included the Frankie Muniz teen comedy Agent Cody Banks, where she played a CIA handler and an appearance as Rose in the revisionist western Seraphim Falls. She eventually returned to television, appearing as Jane Rizzoli alongside Sasha Alexander's Maura Isles in Rizzoli & Isles. Harmon went on to direct the show's 100th episode and picked up a People's Choice Award for her performance. Recently, Harmon appeared in the Lifetime movie Buried in Barstow, part of a multi-picture deal she signed with the channel.
In an interview with ET, Harmon says she would be happy to revisit her character. She reveals that the show reached out to her when it was revived in 2021 and told the show that she would "love to maybe do an arc or something." Harmon also fondly regards her character, saying that she would "love to revisit Abbie," describing the assistant DA as "just so fun and wonderful." Read the full quote below:
“I was like, ‘Look, guys. I mean, I would love to maybe do an arc or something.”[...]“I would love to revisit Abbie. She was just so fun and wonderful,”
Although Harmon wasn't recast for the show's revived season 21 in 2021, if she re-joins for the recently announced season 22, she would be following in the likes of Sam Waterston and Anthony Anderson. The two actors reprised their roles of Jack McCoy and Kevin Barnard, along with the return of Dick Wolf to the executive producer's chair. Were Harmon to come back too, then season 22 would be able to add another nostalgic feather to its cap.
Harmon's return to Law & Order could grant her the explosive moment she requested when she initially left the show. Frustrated that her shooting schedule meant she missed out on films like Charlie's Angels and the fact that she perceived Carmichael as having not grown throughout the show, she asked Dick Wolf to kill her off spectacularly, but he refused. Instead, her character took a position in the U.S Attorney's office and was replaced by ElisabethRohm'ss Serena Southerlyn.
