Laurence Fishburne may be playing an older take on Dr. Bill Foster in Ant-Man and the Wasp, but that might not stop him from suiting up. While the film's first teaser only offered a glimpse of Bill Foster, we got a bit more of him in the full Ant-Man and the Wasp trailer. It's revealed here that Foster did indeed work on a Project Goliath and that it involved him growing in size—though not as much as Scott Lang did in Captain America: Civil War. Like with Hank Pym, it's assumed this is all behind Foster and he's just a scientist now, but you never know with the MCU.
The Ant-Man and the Wasp character posters not only put Foster with the rest of the core characters—suggesting his role is fairly substantial—but the proper look at Janet van Dyne proves you're never too old to put on a super-suit. There's no telling what Janet's been doing in the Quantum Realm, but her costume suggests she's been active and utilizing an updated take on her Wasp uniform. So could Fishburne become Goliath once more?
During Screen Rant's set visit to Ant-Man & the Wasp, we heard from executive producer Stephen Broussard about exactly how Foster will factor into the film and deviate a bit from the comics.
"He’s Dr. Bill Foster, the classic guy from the books and this version of him in the MCU is a colleague of Hank’s that they used to work together and perhaps had a falling out, but in a time of need, in this movie, he’s gotta go -- Hank has to return to him and ask him for help."
While Goliath was a contemporary of the Avengers and Hank Pym before his death during Civil War, he was still at the eternal age of most superheroes in Marvel Comics. Now, like Pym, he'll be older and past his superhero days. He'll also share a rivalry with the former Ant-Man from their time working together on what would become the Pym Particle.
So while there may be some animosity between the two, that doesn't mean Foster won't step up when he's needed. When asked whether Fishburne will suit up as Goliath in Ant-Man 2, Broussard had this to say:
"Maybe. The idea would be that perhaps they had worked together in the past on a lot of projects including some of the shrinking and growing tech. How that plays into this story, I think we’d rather leave unsaid for the moment."
This certainly sounds like a fairly standard answer designed not to spoil the moment, but Broussard easily could have shot down the idea. Ant-Man & the Wasp will see multiple heroes and villains suiting up, so the idea of seeing Goliath in action is hardly impossible—especially if Foster thinks he knows better than Pym when it comes to solving a particular problem.
Ant-Man and the Wasp is tracking strong right now, and it looks like it will easily outstrip the original movie. From the first film to the second, Hope van Dyne stepped up and became a full-fledged superhero. So it certainly seems possible that more size-changing crimefighters could emerge from Ant-Man & the Wasp.
