Warner Bros. has greenlit an adaption of Father of the Bride with a Latinx cast. The classic wedding movie, which was released in 1950, stars Spencer Tracy as the father of the bride-to-be, played by Elizabeth Taylor, as he struggles to put together his daughter's wedding and comes to terms with his little girl growing up along the way. The movie was remade in 1991 with Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Kimberly Williams, George Newbern, Martin Short, B. D. Wong, and Kieran Culkin.

According to Deadline, this upcoming remake of Father of the Bride will have its own unique take on the classic wedding movie. This remake will be the first to feature a family of color. Matt Lopez (Bedtime Stories, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Race to Witch Mountain) will be penning this version of the film based on experiences from his cross-cultural wedding and several other Cuban weddings he has attended. This rendition will revolve around a large Cuban-American family, which will likely cause the movie to feature a bigger cast and explore more familial relationships than previous versions of the film have. The movie will likely tackle more of the emotional components of a father watching his daughter grow up.

Additionally, the film will take on more elements from the romantic comedy genre than past versions have. Jesse Ehrman and Paul Perez will serve as producers with Warner Bros. to help oversee Lopez's vision. Warner Bros. signed onto this remake just as Netflix released its trailer for a reunion special for Martin's Father of the Bride which will launch on the platform Friday.
