New set images from HBO’s upcoming series The Last of Us might show off the Boston quarantine zone. The series has been highly anticipated from the moment it was announced, with HBO finally taking the lead in bringing the award-winning and record-breaking game to life. Fans had previously been hopeful for a film version of the games and although there was serious consideration given to such a possibility, development officially fell apart in 2018.
At long last in the late stages of 2020, HBO announced that they were in the process of developing a TV series based on the franchise. With its notorious penchant for violence, terrifying antagonists both alive and undead, as well as a considerable emotional backbone, The Last of Us has easily been able to surpass the innumerable other post-apocalyptic/zombie invasion genre stories that have been created in recent years. Whether or not the tremendous success that both games in the series have experienced to date will translate to the HBO series remains to be seen. However, The Last of Us creator Neil Druckman has played a major role in ensuring that the games’ authenticity isn’t squandered. In fact, it was Druckman who reportedly decided that the previous attempt to adapt the series into a film was too focused on big-budget flair – something that betrayed the stripped-down tone of the games.
Production on The Last of Us has been taking place for several weeks now in Canada and thanks to The Last of Us Updates Twitter account, new images have arrived that fans of the game are sure to recognize. Though it’s yet to be officially confirmed, the new images look uncannily like the Boston quarantine zone from the first game’s early stages. Fans are already making game-to-set comparisons and these have only increased the certainty among many that this is indeed the Boston quarantine zone. Check out the photos below:
The Boston quarantine zone played a huge role in getting the plot of The Last of Us off the ground. Set 20 years after the death of his daughter and the destruction of the world he once knew, Boston is the city in which lead character Joel ends up thanks to the persistent devastation of the Cordyceps virus. It’s here where Joel’s life is forever transformed after he is tasked with accompanying 14-year-old Ellie to a rebel-held safe space. The safekeeping of Ellie is essential, as she is the only known human to have been bitten by an infected and not succumb to the devastating effects of the virus. The plan is to submit Ellie to tests at the safe space facility, but the challenges of that journey soon become terrifyingly apparent.
If points are being given for HBO’s efforts so far to make the set of The Last of Us as close as possible to what’s in the game, then these most recent images are a solid 10. There’s still a long way to go until the series arrives, but what’s been seen from the production as well as the cast that’s been established are all key signs that things are indeed going in the right direction. There’s no guarantee that the series will hit the same highs as the games have, of course, but then again there’s also the possibility that the series could even surpass the games in terms of quality. At this point, anything seems possible.
