After years of failing to make its way to the screen, the first The Last of Us look has arrived. The HBO series is based on Naughty Dog's video game of the same name set in a post-apocalyptic America overrun by a deadly strain of fungus mutating humans into violent creatures known as Clickers. The Last of Us centers on smuggler Joel as he takes a job escorting the teenage Ellie across the US in the hopes of finding a cure for the world.

Pedro Pascal is leading the cast of The Last of Us as Joel alongside Game of Thrones vet Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Joel's brother Tommy, Merle Dandridge, Jeffrey Pierce, Nico Parker, Anna Torv, Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman and Storm Reid. Neil Druckmann, creator and director of the source game, is co-creating and writing the ten-episode series adaptation alongside Chernobyl scribe Craig Mazin. With production on The Last of Us nearing its end, those behind the show are bringing exciting news for fans of the game.

The first look at Pascal's Joel and Ramsey's Ellie is sure to come as a treat for The Last of Us fans, though many eagle-eyed viewers are sure to be further excited by what's hiding in the background. Covered by darkness, Joel and Ellie look to be hiding from a Clicker in a department store, confirming the iconic game enemies are set to appear in the show and offering the first glimpse at how they're being translated to live-action. With the show's budget reportedly consisting of $15 million per episode, the chances seem high for Joel and Ellie to encounter plenty of other Clickers in The Last of Us series.

In addition to revealing the first The Last of Us image, HBO revealed during the Summer Game Fest that original game stars Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson have been cast for the series as new characters. With the roster of the HBO series now including the original Joel and Ellie voice actors alongside game creator Neil Druckmann and composer Gustavo Santaolalla, those who fell in love with Naughty Dog's award-winning title are sure to find their concerns continue to melt away. With production set to conclude this week on The Last of Us, audiences will have to keep their eyes peeled for further looks at the HBO series ahead of its reported 2023 premeire.
