Warning! SPOILERS for The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part IIHBO's The Last of Us has already introduced a detail that is extremely important to Ellie's character, effectively ruining one of her big moments in The Last of Us season 2. Ellie is arguably the most importance character in both The Last of Us games, with her being the focus of the series' most emotional moments. However, one of these emotional moments may not work anymore, as The Last of Us has potentially mishandled a musical element that was previously essential Ellie's character arc.

After only a few episodes of HBO's popular adaptation, The Last of Us season 2 has already been announced. Although not many details came with the announcement of the show's renewal, The Last of Us season 2 is expected to follow the story of The Last of Us Part II, the 2020 sequel to the original game. The Last of Us Part II is an incredibly controversial game, due to some of its story decisions that were leaked pre-release, but one of its few universally beloved moments may not work in the HBO show anymore.

'80s Song Meanings Ruin Ellie's Future "Take On Me" Moment In The Last Of Us

Ellie Last of Us

HBO's The Last of Us has already changed the meaning of a-Ha's "Take On Me," a song from 1985 that is important to Ellie's character arc in The Last of Us Part II. In the HBO series, '80s songs are played over the radio to signal danger or trouble. The Last of Us' episode 1 ending song, "Never Let Me Down Again," and Wham!'s "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" are just a couple examples of this. Adding the connotation of danger to these '80s songs is nice world-building, but it also ruins one of Ellie's best moments from The Last of Us Part II.

In The Last of Us Part II, Ellie performs an acoustic cover of "Take On Me" for her girlfriend, Dina. Not only is this a key moment in Ellie and Dina's relationship, but it has even more meaning due to the fact that Joel gave her the guitar she uses the play the song. However, this scene might not work well if it's done in The Last of Us season 2, as the characters (and the audience) have already been conditioned to think that '80s songs mean bad news, thereby completely changing the meaning of Ellie and Dina's moment.

Why "Take On Me" Is Already Significant In HBO's The Last Of Us

The Last of Us Part II Ellie Guitar BAFTA Nominations

"Take On Me" is the song in The Last of Us trailer, making it already significant to the HBO series. "Take On Me" has kind of become a theme song for The Last of Us since Ellie sang it in The Last of Us Part II, meaning that the choice to use it in the trailer was intentional. However, with the constant use of '80s song in HBO's The Last of Us, it will probably pop up again.

The writers of HBO's The Last of Us definitely know the significance of the song in the games, meaning that the choice to use it in the trailer may be hinting at what's to come. Using "Take on Me" implies that The Last of Us season 2 will not only feature Ellie and Dina's relationship, but it may also feature Joel's controversial death from The Last of Us games. While this is a neat setup, HBO's The Last of Us using "Take on Me" already ruined Ellie's big season 2 moment.
