According to a new post from prominent leaker Tom Henderson, the heavily rumored remake of The Last of Us may release sometime in 2022. Henderson noted that it is nearing completion, suggesting a release sooner rather than later. It's still relatively unclear what changes will be made to the game and if Naughty Dog is the sole developer on The Last of Us remake, but multiple reputable sources have spoken to its existence in the past.

In 2021, it was reported that The Last of Us remake was in development, but details were sparse. Given the first game isn't that old, some believed that Sony issued the order to develop the remake to tie in with the HBO series. It's unclear if it will link the two versions of Naughty Dog's acclaimed story more closely together or if it's just a more polished, modern version for new audiences. It seems like more details should be coming relatively soon, though.

Reputable insider Tom Henderson has said that multiple people have told him that The Last of Us remake is nearly complete and should be ready for release in the second half of 2022. Similarly, Henderson noted that the long-awaited Last of Us 2 multiplayer project will also be ready for a release around that same time, as well as a Director's Cut edition, per Henderson. Of course, Naughty Dog has a history of delaying games in the final hour, so anything can shift at any time. Nonetheless, if they really are coming in 2022, fans can probably expect to hear more about it in the spring or summer during a State of Play event.

It's unclear if Naughty Dog is working on any other new games. These two projects seem like relatively sizable undertakings, so it's hard to imagine a third, larger game in full development. It's possible leads like Neil Druckmann and writers are hashing out a story for what comes next and all of the developers will move on to that project once work is completed on the two Last of Us-related titles.

Whether or not the Last of Us remake will impact TLOU3 remains to be seen, but it's possible that Naughty Dog wants to lay the foundation for things to come. Perhaps the remake will even include special perks for the upcoming multiplayer game. Either way, Sony's 2022 is looking rather exciting. Alongside The Last of Us remake potentially on its way, Sony will also release games like God of War RagnarokHorizon Forbidden West, and many others.
