The Last of Us 2 is now a definite inclusion in the upcoming Sony PS4 State of Play September presentation this Tuesday, thanks to a Twitter announcement from Naughty Dog confirming the game's presence there. For those unfamiliar, Sony's State of Play presentations are the company's PS4 events that function very similarly to Nintendo Directs, revealing major exclusive game announcements or technological reveals and just generally painting a picture for fans about what the next few months of releases might look like.

Sony is in a position of enviable strength heading into the 2019 holiday season already. Death Stranding, the on-again off-again (currently on) PS4 exclusive from Hideo Kojima will release on November 8, right in time for sales to pick up as consumers decide which titles they'll play to get them through the winter. Following the new year, the PlayStation 4 will be releasing two other major titles in The Last of Us 2 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake. The former is speculated to have a February release date, which would sandwich it nicely in between Death Stranding and Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which will arrive in March. All of these are PS4 exclusives, and that's not including Sucker Punch's Ghost of Tsushima, a game that was originally tagged for 2019 and could be arriving in early 2020 instead to further cement the beginning of the year as one of Sony's most exciting ever.

What the road up to those releases looks like will get a little clearer this Tuesday, September 24, when Sony hosts the next PS4 State of Play event, and according to Naughty Dog, The Last of Us 2 will definitely be there. The studio took to Twitter to post a teaser gif featuring a worn-out looking knife suspended in darkness with a quote that looms ominously above the image: "I'm gonna find...and I'm gonna kill...ever last one of them." The image was also retweeted by Naughty Dog director of communications Arne Meyer, who also thanked fans for their patience in the build-up to one of the most anticipated games of 2020.

There's still not much to go on in regards to what, exactly, fans will be treated to during the State of Play presentation, but at the very least it'll be more The Last of Us 2 info than they've gotten in quite some time (it's hard to be less than nothing, after all). Naughty Dog isn't the type of studio to tease a small announcement this heavily, though, so it seems fair for those interested in more on Ellie and Joel to assume they'll get quite a bit of information in under a week.

For Sony, it's a much-needed shift of the spotlight back to the PlayStation 4 platform, which has seen its console dominance slip away in the wake of the Nintendo Switch's continued success. It hasn't been a disaster by any means - the PS4 might eventually eclipse the PS2's historical best sales still - but in the gaming industry, it's more about what a company has done lately, and a major The Last of Us 2 reveal should bridge the gap between this presentation and the release of Death Stranding perfectly.
