A free 60fps performance patch for The Last of Us Part II is now available for PlayStation 5 players. Since its release last year, The Last of Us 2 received smaller updates that added Grounded difficulty and a permadeath mode. Though Naughty Dog released the Left Behind DLC for The Last of Us, it appears that the developer is no longer planning The Last Of Us 2 DLC content.

Despite this, Naughty Dog is still looking to continue the franchise in potentially several different ways. A PS5 remake of the original game from 2013 is rumored to be in development, with Naughty Dog at the helm. Though fans have wondered if such a project is necessary, the remake would potentially stand to improve some dated gameplay elements from the PS3 original. Aside from a remake, the franchise will move to TV for the first with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey playing Joel and Ellie in an HBO television series, which recently found its directors. Though Naughty Dog's spread thin between multiple projects, the Sony studio is continuing to update The Last of Us 2 with new improvements in 2021.

In a post on PlayStation Blog today, Naughty Dog announced that a new performance mode patch for The Last of Us Part II is available now for PS5 players. Patch 1.08 is a free upgrade for the game that gives players the option to choose between 30fps and 60fps modes. When it released in 2020, The Last of Us Part II targeted 30fps on both base PS4 and PS4 Pro. With this patch, the targeted framerate has effectively doubled with the newfound power of the PS5. The studio notes that patch 1.08 is “just the first step of working on the PS5” for Naughty Dog.

This new 60fps patch is the latest upgrade for a PS4 game on PlayStation 5. Games like Ghost of Tsushima and God of War have received upgrades thanks to the improved hardware specs of Sony’s new console. Fans will surely be happy to jump back into the game with the new enhancements. This announcement comes at an interesting time for Naughty Dog, who is rumored to be using The Last of Us 2's engine for its remake of the original.

Not only is a remake rumored to be on the way, but the HBO Max show based on the first game is in its beginning stages of production and stands to only make the franchise more mainstream when it arrives. The Last of Us series has been an incredibly successful franchise for PlayStation, and it will surely continue in the years to come.
