Sony has unveiled a limited The Last of Us Part 2-inspired PlayStation 4 Pro less than seven months before the expected release of its next-generation PlayStation 5, fueling questions as to who would buy the limited edition console so close to the PS5’s launch. While Sony has yet to reveal the exact release date of the PS5, the company has said that the console is still scheduled to hit markets sometime in Holiday 2020.

There’s no shortage of rumors surrounding the PS5. Most recently, it’s been rumored that the console’s launch game lineup is set to be unveiled next month. It’s also been rumored that the PS5 will be released in November to coincide with the alleged arrival of its accompanying DualSense controller. Officially, though, Sony has been pretty stingy with information about its next-generation console, only revealing a few details and features about the PS5 since it was officially announced.

Sony announced the limited edition The Last of Us Part 2 PS4 Pro on the PlayStation Blog. Apart from the console, Sony will also be releasing a limited edition DualShock 4 wireless controller, Gold Wireless Headset, and 2TB Game Drive from Seagate. All the limited edition items prominently feature the game’s logo as well as Ellie’s tattoo design. Naughty Dog Art Director John Sweeney talked about the inspiration behind the design of the products:

“When the opportunity arose to create a custom PS4 Pro for The Last of Us Part II, I worked with our graphic designer at the time, Angel Garcia, and we considered a few different ideas, but we kept coming back to Ellie’s tattoo. By that point, it had become a symbol of the game and for the community–much like the Firefly logo in the first game. It was the clear choice, but we wondered: what if it could be engraved? It hadn’t been done before, so we weren’t sure it was even possible, but thanks to the incredible efforts of the teams at PlayStation, we found a way.”

The limited edition The Last of Us Part 2 PS4 Pro bundle is set to release alongside the game on June 19, 2020. The bundle will not only include the customized PS4 Pro console and limited edition DualShock 4 controller but also a physical copy of The Last of Us Part 2 and a code for some digital content including a dynamic PS4 theme, avatars, and more. While Sony did not explicitly say when the limited edition Gold Wireless Headset and 2TB Game Drive will be available, both should be arriving at the same time as or near the release of the game.

With the PS5 so close to releasing and with the ongoing global crisis, it seems difficult to imagine many people would shell out the cash for the limited edition The Last of Us Part 2 console, but with the game’s immense popularity, there still may be a few people who would want to pick this up, whether it’s to upgrade from a standard or slim version or to just add to their collection of limited edition PlayStation 4 consoles. Either way, the limited edition The Last of Us Part 2 PS4 Pro is definitely a good-looking console.
