Warning: The article contains spoilers for The Last Thing He Told Me's finale.Apple TV+'s newest hit, The Last Thing He Told Me, gets a mixed season 2 update. Based on the novel of the same name by Laura Dave, who developed the show with Josh Singer, The Last Thing He Told Me focuses on Hannah Hall (Jennifer Garner) as she forms a bond with her stepdaughter Bailey (Angourie Rice) after her husband, Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), disappears under mysterious circumstances. The adaptation recently received positive headlines when it was announced as Apple TV's most-watched limited series ever.

In an interview with Digital Spy, Dave and Singer address the chances of The Last Thing He Told Me season 2. Dave says a follow-up may be possible, while Singer, who co-wrote the films Spotlight and The Post, also shared his mixed outlook and uncertainty about the popular drama's future. See what they said below:

Laura Dave: “It’s possible It’s so funny, it took me about 10 years to write this book. I kept picking it up, and putting it down. I literally threw it in the trash. And it wasn’t until I had my child in 2016 that I realized this was the primal story of someone becoming a parent, and all the ways that that journey looks different for all of us. I wanted it to be an ode to the different ways that that journey looks for all of us, and an ode to found family. And so, in some ways, I feel as though there’s more story to tell. And in other ways, I feel like this is meant to be a limited series. We planned it as a limited series, and I feel like – I hope for people that really connected to the book, and for people that are coming to it fresh – it feels complete onto itself.”

Josh Singer: “We sold it as a ‘limited’, and we always imagined it as a ‘limited’. What I love is, you know, that thing that Laura found when she picked the book up again, which is that you think it’s a love story about Hannah and Owen, and it’s really about Hannah and Bailey moving closer and closer together. And that’s what I think is the magic here. And so, in some ways, that story is complete. So I don’t know.”

What Could Last Thing He Told Me Season 2 Look Like?

In its final scene, The Last Thing He Told Me season 1 does leave the door open for another season due to the five-year time jump. Hannah looks to be much happier when Owen, who now looks a little different with a full beard, brushes up against her in public. It's a brief moment, but it's left to open interpretation whether the two will catch up later on in a more private setting. Owen had to remain in hiding to protect his family, but a potential season 2 could deal with the ramifications of that.

Another big change in the flash-forward is that Bailey has a much stronger relationship with Hannah, actually calling her mom. If it's the case that The Last Thing He Told Me season 2 happens, the show has the option of filling in that five-year gap or sticking with the jump forward. Considering that there are Owen's dangerous outside ties and the two women at the center of the story, the finale offers satisfaction but not a complete resolution.

The Last Thing He Told Me counts Reese Witherspoon as an executive producer, and the show hails from her Hello Sunshine production company. The company was also involved with Big Little Lies, which starred Witherspoon and returned for season 2 after massive success despite being billed as a limited series. After breaking records for AppleTV+, it remains to be seen if the story of Hannah, Bailey, and Owen could continue in the same vein.
