Arnold Schwarzenegger returned as an action hero in 2013's The Last Stand, with the movie using a variety of locations for its story. Directed by South Korean filmmaker Kim Jee-woon in his Hollywood debut, The Last Stand follows cartel boss Gabriel Cortez (Eduaro Noriega) as he tries to cross the border back into Mexico. His path takes him through the small town of Sommerton, Arizona, where Sheriff Ray Owens (Schwarzenegger) marshals a band of deputies against Cortez and his henchmen.

While not a big hit upon its release, The Last Stand was generally well-received for its action-packed, neo-Western story and Arnold Schwarzenegger's action hero performance as a grizzled but stalwart sheriff. Though taking place primarily in Arizona, The Last Stand was not actually filmed there, but in a variety of different locations. Here are the locations where The Last Stand was filmed.

Belen, New Mexico

One of the principal filming locations for The Last Stand was Belen, New Mexico, which was selected for having a vacant, abandoned area that would be well-suited for a film production, and specifically one with the movie's neo-Western vibe. The hotel of Belen, Mexico was used as a filming location, while an abandoned building was used to create the small town's diner. The final battle between Sheriff Owens's makeshift police force and the henchmen of Cortez was also shot in Belen's Becker Ave., specifically between N 1st St. and N 3rd St.

In lieu of the initial plan to film the Las Vegas portions of The Last Stand in the city itself, the production instead shot the bulk of these scenes in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with the city able to convincingly pass for Las Vegas. This choice was also made for logistical reasons, with the production able to shoot the night time-based scenes that took place in Las Vegas from 6 P.M. to 6 A.M. without any disruption to any day-to-day business in the city.

The final chase through a corn field that leads to Owens' final confrontation with Cortez was filmed in Bosque Farms, which sits just outside of Albuquerque. Bosque Farms was also added as a backdrop to Somerton in the post-production to more fully fill out the landscape of the small town of the Schwarzenegger-led action movie.

While the production did not ultimately decide to shoot the Las Vegas portions of the film primarily in the city itself, some exterior shots of Las Vegas were still done for the film, such as the Las Vegas strip. These shots were they added into The Last Stand in post-production to work in tandem with the filming done in Albuquerque, giving the genuine impression of Las Vegas as a significant setting in Arnold Schwarzenegger's action movie comeback.
