How The Last of Us Live-Action Clickers Compare To The Games

The Last of Us TV series was co-developed by Neil Druckmann, who is the creator of the acclaimed Naughty Dog video game of the same name, so there was never really any doubt that HBO's adaptation would remain appropriately faithful to its beloved source material. In The Last of Us games, clickers are humans who have succumbed to the Cordyceps brain fungus and reached the dreaded third stage of infection. The terrifying creatures are colloquially known as clickers due to the sounds they produce for echolocation which, since they are blind, is their primary way of navigating their surroundings.

Based on The Last of Us trailers and other promotional materials, it appears the show's clickers are staying true to the video game in all the best ways possible. The show's creatures appear to be created using practical effects and prosthetics, producing a truly terrifying and unsettling result. As a story, The Last of Us relies heavily on its threats, both infected and human, so it is crucial that HBO's live-action adaptations nails these elements in order for it to function properly and see similar success as the games.

Other than the clickers, the latest Last of Us TV spot also highlights other types of infected individuals, which include runners, stalkers, bloaters, and shamblers. There is also the constant threat of human bandits, who raid settlements inhabited by survivors. If all these threats in The Last of Us function properly, it will allow the show's human relationships, especially that of Joel and Ellie, to develop and thrive. It won't be long before audiences find out for sure, as The Last of Us premieres January 15, 2023 on HBO.
