A very positive update on The Last of Us season 2 from Bella Ramsey indicates it is likely on the way. Ramsey plays Ellie, a teenage girl born into a worldwide apocalypse that is brought on after the Cordyceps fungus evolves to infect human beings. Within days, the majority of the globe has been converted into fungus-driven zombies, and Ellie grows up as an orphan in a Quarantine Zone. Yet, after being bitten by an infected zombie, she discovers she is immune to Cordyceps, and is placed into the care of Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) as he tries to get her to scientists who can use her natural immunity to develop a cure.

As an adaptation, The Last of Us is a game-accurate depiction of a world gone to hell, and Ellie and Joel are right in the middle of the chaos. With its ominous atmosphere, cunning sense of humor, and its willingness to delve deep into the origins of a deadly and world-shattering pandemic, the show doesn't seem afraid to take risks. Now, in an interview with the BBC, Ramsey is proving those risks really have paid off, as she indicates the show is likely to get a season 2. Check out her quote below:

"If people keep watching, I think [a second series] is pretty likely. It's down to the guys at HBO."

Why The Last Of Us Will Likely Get A Season 2 Renewal

Joel and Bill in The Last of Us

It's no great surprise that The Last of Us season 2 renewal is already the expectation. Already, The Last of Us episode 2 broke HBO records for viewership with a 22% jump in ratings between the first two episodes. Word of mouth is spreading quickly about the show, causing more viewers to jump on every week, even with the series already being heavily marketed by HBO. It certainly helps that its star-studded cast includes Pascal and Ramsey, two actors who are quickly coming to dominate the TV market with Game of Thrones and The Mandalorian.

The jump in ratings isn't even the only impressive record that The Last of Us has broken, as its premiere was the 2nd highest of the decade, beating Game of Thrones and Euphoria and only failing to outrace House of the Dragon, a hit show which benefited from being a Game of Thrones prequel. Such high ratings, combined with a spike that has seen The Last of Us shatter expectations, serve as a virtual guarantee for renewal.

The Last of Us is proving that video game adaptations are not always guaranteed to be poor films and shows, and that they can draw numbers if done well. The quality of The Last of Us has seen such support that it temporarily broke a long-standing Breaking Bad record by becoming the #1 TV show on IMDb for days, before the AMC series clawed its way back to the top. Still, it has earned massive critical acclaim, and its viewership numbers are only continuing to rise. With that in mind, it's no surprise that Ramsey believes The Last of Us season 2 is on the way.
