As its acclaimed debut season nears its end, Pedro Pascal has shared a cryptic The Last of Us season 2 filming update. Based on the Naughty Dog game of the same name, the post-apocalyptic series quickly became one of HBO's biggest hits upon its premiere, becoming the second-biggest launch for any show since 2010 and garnering near-universal acclaim. This success led to an early The Last of Us season 2 renewal, and audiences may not have to wait too long to see the next chapter of the series.

While speaking with Collider to discuss The Mandalorian season 3, Pedro Pascal looked to the future to discuss The Last of Us season 2. When asked for a season 2 filming update, namely whether production would kick off in 2023, the Joel actor offered a playful response, pondering what season of the year it currently is. Pascal did offer a more cryptic bit of confirmation, saying that "there is a chance" that The Last of Us season 2 could begin filming later this year.

With season 1 proving a very faithful adaptation of the game's story, questions have swirled of whether The Last of Us season 2 will jump directly into the events of The Last of Us Part II. Given the game features a four-year time jump, the show getting back to filming this year would put just two years between both productions, likely necessitating some tweaks to the source material's story. The Last of Us season 1 has even featured a few nods to the second game already, namely Joel's emotional confession to Tommy in episode 6.

Just prior to the show's renewal, series co-creator and original game creator Neil Druckmann assured that The Last of Us wouldn't be exploring too much outside of the source material to avoid running the material into the ground. Despite this, however, Druckmann's creative partner Craig Mazin has said that The Last of Us season 2 may be split up into two parts in order to cover the larger scope of the second game's story.

Bella Ramsey, the young star behind protagonist Ellie, did recently confirm that the writers room for The Last of Us season 2 has already been put together. With Druckmann and Mazin having confirmed talks for how the next season should play out, it seems likely the turnaround time in writing will be efficient and allow Pascal, Ramsey and the rest of the cast get back to work later this year. In the meantime, audiences can look forward to the remaining episodes of The Last of Us season 1 airing Sundays on HBO and HBO Max.
