According to The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey, the season 1 finale will be controversial. The popular live-action video game adaptation centers on the relationship between weathered survivor Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Ramsey) as they traverse across a post-apocalyptic United States to the Fireflies, a revolutionary faction that aims to save the world. Although Joel initially wanted nothing to do with Ellie, surviving together for months dug up feelings Joel hasn't experienced since pre-Cordyceps outbreak.

Speaking with Vogue, Ramsey teased a divisive conclusion to HBO's The Last of Us season 1. Although the actor primarily discussed her character's wardrobe, she briefly addressed what's to come on the critically-acclaimed series. Ramsey called episode 8 "exhausting" by admitted that they were some of her "favorite days on set." Without detailing any specifics, she revealed that the highly-anticipated season finale is "going to divide people massively – massively."

What to Expect from The Last of Us Season 1 Finale

In the run-up to the premiere of HBO's The Last of Us, original game director and series co-creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin repeatedly reassured viewers that the adaptation will adhere closely to the beloved source material. With seven episodes released, the creative partners' assurances proved true with the series largely sticking to the game's narrative beats and even using word-for-word game dialogue. As such, it is expected that the series' conclusion will match that of the game.

The Last of Us episode 8 trailer sees Ellie struggle to keep Joel alive while facing off against a new survivor group led by the fiercely religious David (Scott Shepard). The video teased Joel back on his feet and reuniting with Ellie at some point. However, their reunion won't be without its fair share of bloodshed.

Joel and Ellie's next stop will be with the Fireflies, hopefully reaching the Fireflies in one piece with the promise to create a vaccine to rid the world of the horrific Cordyceps fungal infection. As seen with the massive changes to Bill and Frank's backstory in episode 3, the introduction of insurrectionist leader Kathleen (Melanie Lynskey) in episode 4, and several key character changes including Sam (Keivonn Woodard) who is deaf in the show, there is a chance that The Last of Us season 1 finale may feature several significant changes. With episode 9 airing March 12, audiences do not have to wait much longer to see if HBO's The Last of Us season 1 finale will adhere to the source material and be as divisive as Ramsey claims.
