Released by Naughty Dog in 2013, the action-adventure survival-horror treated audiences with thrilling grounded gameplay guided by a compelling narrative filled with emotional drama. The Last of Us was met with universal praise from both critics and audiences alike, garnering dozens of awards for its writing, gameplay, and performances from its lead actors, Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker, who play Ellie and Joel, respectively. Both actors are set to appear in the upcoming series, but in different roles. Only Merle Dandridge, the voice and performance actor who portrayed Marlene, the leader of the Fireflies, reprises her character in the HBO show.

With The Last of Us' original co-creator as an executive producer on the upcoming HBO adaptation, the series aims to recapture the magic of the original game. The show's latest trailers have shown faithful reproductions of the original game's environments, near identical plot points and scenes, as well as dialogue taken directly from the source material. However, Druckmann and series showrunner Craig Mazin recently assured fans that The Last of Us series will feature new story elements written specifically for the show that will blow the audience's minds.

Leaked set photos and promotional material have shown various differences between The Last of Us television show and the original game. Pittsburgh, a significant obstacle in Joel and Ellie's journey to the Fireflies, has been changed to Kansas City for the show. There, they are set to meet brothers Henry (Lamar Johnson) and Sam (Keivonn Woodard), both characters found in the game. However, Joel and Ellie may also come in contact with Kathleen (Melanie Lynskey), a new character who leads a violent group of survivors that control the city. With The Last of Us set to premiere on HBO on January 15, 2023, audiences do not have to wait much longer to see if the adaptation lives up to the iconic game.
