With the series developed by the original game's co-director, Neil Druckmann, and self-professed super-fan Craig Mazin (Chernobyl), the Last of Us show is expected to be a high-quality adaptation of the game. During the show's long production, photos and videos of The Last of Us' sets demonstrated the meticulous recreation of game environments and characters. Early promotional material and the latest trailer have confirmed that many of the original game's fan favorite characters and moments, including The Last of Us' heart-wrenching opening sequence with Joel's daughter, Sarah (Nico Parker), have been recreated in stunning detail.

However, based on the recent comments from Druckmann and Mazin at CCXP 2022 coupled with the release of the latest trailer, The Last of Us will feature new characters and additions to the story. Druckmann revealed that cut content that was originally intended for the game has been inserted into the series while Mazin, who wrote the show, promised new mind-blowing story additions. Graham Greene's Marlon, a survivor who lives with his wife Florence (Elaine Miles) in Wyoming, is a new character that has been created specifically for HBO's The Last of Us. Also, Frank (Murray Bartlett), a character who was found dead in the game, is shown alive in the latest Last of Us trailer.

Although fans of the original game can expect a faithful retelling of its iconic story, there appears to be more than enough new content to keep returning franchise fans surprised. The Last of Us series is set to continue the trend of quality video game adaptations following the success of Sonic the Hedgehog and Uncharted. With the HBO premiere date a little over a month away, audiences do not have to wait much longer to see how faithful The Last of Us adaptation is to the original game.
