How Joel & Ellie's Relationship Has Grown So Far

Joel laughing at Ellie's joke in The Last of Us episode 4

The Last of Us series premiere saw Joel and Ellie at odds, with the 14-year-old orphan nearly stabbing the grizzled survivor. However, as the popular zombie horror show continued, the pair have faced an assortment of life-changing obstacles, as well as hours and hours of being on the road together with not much to do. Although Joel sees the girl as cargo - something he calls Ellie to her face - he also finds himself teaching her about the world outside of the Boston Quarantine Zone and how to survive within it.

With The Last of Us episode 3 primarily focused on the Bill and Frank's relationship, episode 4 was the first chapter in the HBO adaptation that depicted Joel and Ellie together for its entirety. The episode highlighted Ellie's inquisitive nature as she questions Joel about the seemingly alien world around them while he embraces his protector role. However, after Ellie is forced to fight for their lives, Joel becomes a mentor for her as well, showing her how to handle Frank's old pistol.

Periodically throughout episode 4, Ellie broke through moments of silence with her book of puns. Although her jokes seemed to initially irk Joel, her last diarrhea pun infiltrated the hardened smuggler's tough facade and finally made him smile. With The Last of Us episode 5 set to premiere early on Friday, audiences do not have to wait long to see how Joel and Ellie's relationship will grow.
