Universal Pictures reveals that Edgar Wright's psychological thriller Last Night in Soho is coming to video-on-demand platforms beginning next week. Wright directed his genre debut on a script he co-wrote with 1917's Oscar-nominated screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns from a story he crafted. The story for Last Night in Soho revolves around a modern-day aspiring fashion designer who finds herself transported to the titular region in the 1960s at night and attached to the life of a dazzling wannabe singer, though learns of a dark secret that threatens to shatter the line between the past and present and dreams and reality.

Wright assembled an ensemble cast for Last Night in Soho including Jojo Rabbit's Thomasin McKenzie, Golden Globe winner Anya Tyalor-Joy, Emmy nominee Matt Smith, Michael Ajao, Diana Rigg in her final role and Terence Stamp. Much like other projects in his filmography, Wright spent over a decade developing the film, having first came up with the concept in 2007 but not properly getting to work writing it until shortly after the release of Baby Driver in an effort to change creative gears. After being delayed multiple times due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Last Night in Soho finally hit theaters in time for Halloween and now the studio behind it has exciting news for those still concerned about going to the theater.

A few weeks after the film first hit theaters, the official Last Night in Soho Twitter account has announced that the psychological thriller will be released on VOD on November 19. At the time of writing, no bonus features have been announced for the digital release, nor how long the rental window will last on the various digital platforms. Check out the announcement below:

While some may rush to see the decision to bring Last Night in Soho to VOD this early after its theatrical release as stemming from its lackluster box office numbers, it actually falls in line with Universal's release schedule amidst the pandemic thus far. With the studio's streaming service Peacock still finding its legs, Universal has primarily focused on releasing the majority of its films this year theatrically first followed by a VOD rental period three weeks after its big screen premiere. Given some still aren't ready to brave going to a theater for the remainder of the year, the decision to release Last Night in Soho on digital platforms early is sure to come as welcome news.

Since making its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival in September, Last Night in Soho has seen largely favorable reviews from critics and audiences alike. Though sitting as Wright's lowest-reviewed directorial project on Rotten Tomatoes, the film still sits with a solid 75 percent approval rating from reviewers and 90 percent approval rating from general audiences. Only time will tell if the latter score rises when Last Night in Soho hits digital platforms on November 19.
