New behind-the-scenes images from Edgar Wright’s upcoming psychological horror film, Last Night in Soho, hint at the story’s 1960s era intrigue. Since first making a name for himself with 2004’s Shaun of the Dead, Wright has been known for his horror-comedies, particularly those that make up his beloved Cornetto Trilogy. With Last Night in Soho, however, Wright has dropped the comedy, opting instead for psychological scares.

Within the psychological horror genre, some of its greatest examples arrived during the '60s, with films like Repulsion, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? and Seconds offering healthy doses of downright creepiness. Wright’s new film follows Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie), a small town girl whose acceptance to the London College of Fashion means she’s delighted to finally be a part of modern day London’s big city glamour. But not long after she arrives, Eloise begins to realize that life in the city isn’t quite as she’d imagined it. She begins to take extended trips to the past, by inhabiting the body of local entertainer, Sandie (Anya Taylor-Joy), and while this proves to be exhilarating at first, in time, Eloise finds herself struggling with the possibility that she could very well be the next victim of a killer who appears to be on the loose.

The latest look at the role that the '60s will play in Last Night in Soho comes courtesy of The Guardian. Photographer Greg Williams captured a series of behind the scenes images during the film’s London production. Shot in moody black and white, the new photos offer an additional layer of intrigue to what’s already been hinted at within the film’s past promotions. Even without the glitzy bright lights of 1960s London, it’s evident that Last Night in Soho is anchored in the sixties, and the film promises, at the very least, to be a visual treat. For many fans, the psychological horror genre is intrinsically linked to the '60s, and Wright, with his encyclopaedic knowledge of film, has often relayed his love for not only the genre, but the '60s era films that made it soar. It’s likely for this reason that his latest effort spends a considerable amount of time in the decade, delivering the sort of scares that rely on a fantastical but ultimately deadly journey into the past. Last Night in Soho is set to officially release on October 29, so until then, exactly how much of the film’s plot and scares take place in the '60s remains a bit of a mystery. For now, the film’s artwork and trailers have given fans glimpses of what to expect.

With its suspense laden nods to the past, stylish design, and impeccable '60s soundtrack, Wright’s Last Night in Soho seems poised to introduce the popular decade to a new generation of fans. This time around, the fantastical elements aren’t quite as outright as what’s been seen in the majority of the filmmaker’s previous work. Nonetheless, Wright has never been a filmmaker who rests on his laurels, and his eagerness to honor the films that influenced him, while pushing forward with something new, has consistently kept fans coming back for more.
