The Saxon Stories, by Bernard Cornwell, provides the riveting narrative for the much-loved BBC and Netflix series, The Last Kingdom. So far, each season has been based on two books. As such, it would be safe to assume that Season 4 is an adaptation from The Empty Throne and The Pagan Lord.

Season 3 came to a close with Uhtred and Brida saving Ragnar’s soul. Riveting viewing! In keeping with the previous season’s build-up of suspense, it would seem Season 4 has some great things in store. Here are some things viewers can expect in the upcoming season, according to the books:

Power struggles

Political turmoil is expected to reign in Season 4. The plots of Seasons 1 to 3 have been colored by the relationship between Uhtred and Alfred; in the new season, the focus should shift to the relationship between Uhtred and Alfred’s children, which will have huge political implications for the future conquest of England.

If disputes arise between Alfred’s children in Season 4, will Uhtred side with Aethelflaed of Mercia or Edward of Wessex? This struggle over power and politics will make for some riveting viewing.

Destiny

Let’s face it, Uhtred has some great and noble ambitions which extend beyond exacting revenge for the injustices against his family. He wants to conquer the fortress of Bebbanburg and he can only do so through slaying his wicked uncle Aelfric.

Aelfric is the one who conspired with the Danes to murder Uhtred's family. It was also through his actions that Uhtred was sold into slavery. Fans hope to see this final showdown between Uhtred and Aelfric in the next season of The Last Kingdom.

Queen of Mercia takes center stage

The warrior Queen of Mercia, Aethelflaed, is expected to rise to prominence in the new season. This fearless and daring leader rode ahead of the Mercian army in the Season 3 finale and in Season 4, viewers can expect equally daring feats from her. Her plotting and scheming have not always made her a firm favorite with viewers but there’s no doubt about it – she makes for some interesting viewing.

In Season 4, her shrewd mind will connect in magical ways with Uhtred’s wayward nature – giving fans a display of online chemistry which will bring them back episode after episode as the narrative unfolds.

A greater display of skill

The fiercely loyal Finan is again on show in Season 4.  This time, viewers can expect a display of his legendary skills as the heat of battle is turned up. Along with being a loyal lieutenant to Uhtred, Finan is also a great fighter with agility and speed.

It’s time to see some more of that brawn for which he is so well loved by fans of the series. Viewers can also expect a greater demonstration of his finesse as a swordsman.

The fate of the warrior priest

Fans of Father Beocca have watched his emotional journey through different tribulations in previous seasons. The warrior priest is a favorite of the show and most viewers agree he deserves only the best. Perhaps, a nice seaside cottage as a retirement house.

What will become of him in Season 4? Regardless of the events that transpire, it should make for some interesting viewing and it is hoped he won’t be among those killed off in battle. Commentaries hint that audiences might see more of Father Pyrlig, the Welsh warrior priest, in Season 4 but whether or not this is to replace Beocca remains to be seen.

Battles take spotlight

Battles and bloodshed are what Season 4 is all about. The new season will incorporate the exceptional fight choreography of previous seasons, taken to a new level. One of the new additions to this choreography will be a shield wall, which will present a formidable sight on the screen.

Some intense and close fighting between the Saxons and Vikings is expected, so buckle your seatbelts and prepare for an onscreen adventure.

The return of Brida

Brida in The Last Kingdom

Fans of the show have eagerly anticipated the return of Brida, the Valkyrie shield maiden, and Season 4 will satisfy this longing. Brida has always wanted revenge for the murder of Ragnar Ragnarson, her husband and in past episodes, helped Uhtred kill the traitor, Aethelwold.

Truth be told, Aethelwold was manipulated by Cnut into murdering Brida’s husband, allowing Cnut to take control of the Danes. Will Brida find out the truth and how will she react? Based on past episodes, her reaction should make for some compelling television.

A King's Family Ties

The latter half of Season 4 must resolve the tentative situation surrounding Edward's bastard son and the fate of Ecgwynn, his first love. The contention is whether their marriage was lawfully recognized by historians.

Into this steps Aethelhelm, Edward's determined father-in-law, who will stop at nothing to defend the lineage of his family. This sets the stage for some heated viewing in Season 4. Due to the show's somewhat historical setting, the writers must balance authenticity with entertainment.

The Battle Of Teotenheale

The Battle of Teotenheale must happen in Season 4. This bloodthirsty battle is based on the historic Battle of Tettenhall. At the same time, the new season will see Uhtred coming to terms with the ongoing military threat of his rivals, Cnut Longsword and Haesten.

With some historical facts thrown in, together with the thrills and spills of screen technology and directive imagination, this is set to be a battle to remember.

Culture struggles arise

Cultural issues surface in Season 4, as Christianity and Paganism become a more central theme. Season 3's close saw Uhtred embrace both his Saxon and Danish identity. Now his son faces an identity struggle and this reflects a deeper theme than nationality.

This time, the struggle is for religious identity. While his father was a Christian who became a pagan, he is a pagan who has converted to Christianity. Is it possible to reconcile Paganism with Christianity? Season 4 might present some of the answers as the two belief systems clash for prominence in the family.
