Matt Damon bids goodbye to Jodie Comer and prepares to fight in a new image from Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel. Adam Driver and Ben Affleck also star in the upcoming medieval epic co-written by Damon, Affleck and Nicole Holofcener.

Damon and Affleck of course rose to fame together as co-writers and co-stars of Good Will Hunting, going on to win an Oscar for their script. In The Last Duel, Damon plays the knight Jean de Carrouges, who challenges his squire Jacques Le Gris (Driver) to a duel after his wife Marguerite de Carrouges (Comer) accuses Le Gris of rape. Affleck plays Peter II of Alençon in this version of the true story of the last legally sanctioned duel in France. Sam Hazeldine, Michael McElhatton, Harriet Walter and Nathaniel Parker also star.

Matt Damon Prepares To Fight In The Last Duel Image

The Last Duel is indeed a major change-of-pace for the team of Damon and Affleck. After starring together in the contemporary drama Good Will Hunting, the two re-teamed to play fallen angels in Kevin Smith’s comedy Dogma. They next paired for the Smith film Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Of course they are also credited together on many other movies, having been collaborators in multiple capacities over the course of their careers. But The Last Duel sees them not only back together writing but also appearing on-screen and for the first time in a full-on costume drama.

Scott of course has visited the past many times over the course of his storied career. He actually kicked off his feature film directorial career with another movie centered on dueling, the 1977 drama The Duellists. He later visited Spanish colonial times with 1492: Conquest of Paradise and then of course went much further back to ancient Rome for his Oscar-winner Gladiator. The Crusades were the subject of his 2005 film Kingdom of Heaven. In 2010’s Robin Hood, he visited roughly the same time period as that of The Last Duel. And of course there’s 2014’s Exodus: Gods and Kings, set in ancient Egypt.

It remains to be seen where The Last Duel ultimately ranks among Ridley Scott’s many period-set films but he certainly has a strong cast and the movie’s scenario is highly intriguing. And the one thing audiences can be sure of when Scott’s behind the camera is that the movie will be a visual feast. The Last Duel brings in the extra element of Affleck and Damon appearing together in medieval garb in a movie that’s not about stoners.
