Here's what viewers can expect from Last Chance U season 6, including spinoff plans, a possible release date, and story details. The Netflix docuseries has focused on three football programs at the junior college (JUCO) level since its debut in 2016. Despite being a bonafide hit for the streaming service, the title will be making major changes ahead of the new season.

When Last Chance U premiered, it centered around East Mississippi Community College, a renowned JUCO football program coached by Buddy Stephens. After a hard-fought season, the Lions faced further struggles when a brawl greatly affected their season, and the athletes' goals in attaining Division I attention. The consequences and suspensions spilled out into the following season, which was the focus of season 2. After documenting two full seasons at EMCC, Last Chance U moved on to Independence Community College in Kansas. As a rural school, Indy faced some of the same issues, but the program had much lower expectations. Matters were made more difficult with the behavior of Jason Brown, who was forced to resign during the series' fourth season.

For season 5, Last Chance U switches teams again, but this time, the series puts the focus on an inner-city JUCO program located in the heart of Oakland, California. The players of Laney College are at the front and center in addition to their legendary coach, John Beam. Unlike the two teams that came before them, Laney will not get a multi-year stint on the docuseries. After five years, Last Chance U is saying goodbye to JUCO football and moving in a new direction for 2021 and beyond.

Last Chance U Season 5 Is The End Of The Football Story

Netflix Last Chance U

Before the release of season 5, Netflix announced that Last Chance U was coming to an end. Even if the new season receives record-breaking attention, the streamer has no plans to focus on football programs in the near future. This may come as a surprise to most viewers, considering the positive reception the docuseries has garnered. Thankfully, Last Chance U isn't planning to disappear completely — it's just changing sports.

Last Chance U Season 6 Will Be Last Chance U: Basketball

Netflix

Along with the announcement of Last Chance U's cancellation, Netflix shared that a spinoff has been greenlit, and the new series will focus on JUCO basketball. The spinoff, titled Last Chance U: Basketball, can technically be considered season 6 of the Emmy-nominated series. It will be presented in the same style as the original show with the same in-depth look at the lives of players in junior college athletics.

Last Chance U Season 6 Release Date

Netflix

In the past, Last Chance U dropped new seasons in July, the time of year when colleges ramp up their training camps ahead of the start of football season. With the change of sport, it wouldn't be shocking to see Last Chance U: Basketball change around the show's timeline. Netflix stated that the new series will premiere in 2021, and it's safe to predict a drop date in the fall. Not only would it give the filming crew ample time to finish up covering the 2019-20 basketball season, but it would also lead up to the traditional start of basketball season.

Last Chance U Season 6 Story Details

Netflix

Last Chance U: Basketball will officially focus on the East Los Angeles Community College Huskies. The spinoff was already well into development when the news was announced since the docuseries followed the team's 2019-20 season. Aside from the typical challenges faced by JUCO athletes, the ELAC players are currently encountering the effects of a halted season due to the coronavirus pandemic. In fact, the season was put on hold just before playoffs were set to begin. In June, it was decided that ELAC's season wouldn't resume until January or February 2021. In addition, the total number of games played will be reduced by 25%. All of these new changes will surely be in focus when Last Chance U returns next year.
