So many games are being released these days that backlogs are getting longer and longer, and actually choosing something to play can be rather difficult. From big AAA titles to multiplayer shooters to smaller indie experiences, there’s a lot to choose from. Even though there are so many games on the market, there are still some that stand out. One such game is The Last Campfire by Hello Games.

The Last Campfire is a single-player, story-based puzzle game. The player follows Ember as they solve puzzles to help others find their way, to find hope, and, finally, to light the last campfire. What appears on the surface to be a simple puzzle game is actually something much more. Everything from the art style to the narration is well-executed and makes playing the game a wonderful experience. Even though smaller indie games like The Last Campfire can be easy to overlook, this title is one players should pick up at any price.

The art style for The Last Campfire is simply beautiful. The character designs are simple but full of whimsy and imagination. The embers are all very similar, but they maintain their own personalities. The fun creatures Ember meets on their journey are one of the best parts of the game. The almost comically massive size difference in comparison to Ember shows just how big the world actually is to them. And while the characters are beautifully done, it is the scenery that is truly impressive. When the cameras pans out over larger areas, especially during cutscenes, players are treated to vibrant colors and ruined-yet-stunning landscapes. The art style is simple, but it packs a punch - it might even be compared to something like Breath of the Wild. Players may find that they spend quite a bit of time admiring the beauty of each area in the game and even taking quite a few screenshots.

The Last Campfire also has a short but sweet story that just might tug on the heartstrings. Some embers have lost their way - or may have lost all hope - and have become forlorn. It is Ember’s duty to help them regain their hope so they can move on. Ember helps them by solving puzzles while hearing a little of their story. The formula is simple but effective. The puzzles themselves are everywhere throughout the game, not just for helping the forlorn. None of them are overly difficult, but some can be a little challenging. The Last Campfire is more of a relaxing experience, it doesn’t have the intensity that other puzzle games may have. Players are able to explore the levels beyond the main objectives, where they can discover little secrets and more pieces of the story.

While the gameplay and the graphics of The Last Campfire are truly remarkable, the stand out portion of the game has to be the narration. The entire game is narrated by former Game of Thrones actress Hannah Murray, who does a fantastic job. Her voice is very soft and soothing, yet still portrays the emotions of the story perfectly. At times, the narration can almost lull the player to sleep. There are captions available, but playing this game without audio would definitely take away from the experience. It is Murray’s performance that really makes this title memorable.

The Last Campfire is the perfect game for players looking for a cozy gaming experience. The story will only take around five hours to complete, but is one that players won’t forget anytime soon. The Last Campfire is available to play on all platforms, and is half price on the Nintendo eShop until June 21st.
