Is The L Word: Generation Q returning for a second series? Alongside Showtime's own Queer As Folk, The L Word is considered a groundbreaking LGBTQ drama series. It debuted in 2004 and the series followed a group of gay women - including Bette (Jennifer Beals), Shane (Katherine Moennig) and Alice (Leisha Hailey) - as they navigated love and life in Los Angeles. The show's pilot proved so popular that a second season was greenlit shortly after it aired.

The L Word ultimately ran for six seasons, coming to an end in 2009. While the show received mostly warm reviews during its run, the character of Jenny Schecter (Mia Kirshner) was widely disliked by many viewers, and the unresolved mystery surrounding her murder in the final season also proving irritating. After ten years the show returned in the form of The L Word: Generation Q, with original cast members Jennifer Beals and Katherine Moennig returning while new characters like Dani Nùñez (Arienne Mandi) and Micah Lee (Leo Sheng) were added to the ensemble.

The L Word: Generation Q received a mostly positive critical reception, though the offscreen death of fan favorite Kit Porter - after actress Pam Grier declined to return - and the lame resolution to the lingering cliffhanger of Jenny's death were cited as disappointments from the new series. The show was still positively received, but will there be a second season?

The L Word: Generation Q Season 2 Was Greenlit In 2020

A second season of The L Word: Generation Q was confirmed ahead of its first season finale in January 2020. The finale came with plenty of drama, with Bette narrowly losing the race to become mayor, Micah discovering his boyfriend is married and Sophie (Rosanny Zayas) racing to the airport after deciding between lover Finley (Jacqueline Toboni) or fiance Dani.

It's unknown who she decided on, however, and it's a good thing Showtime renewed it, as this cliffhanger was shot before The L Word: Generation Q season 2 was confirmed.

When The L Word: Generation Q season 2 was greenlit, some reports expected it to arrive around late 2020. That clearly isn't happening now, and there's been no word from Showtime or the cast and crew as to when viewers should expect it. It's likely the COVID-19 pandemic played a part in the second season's delay and the show will probably return in the first half of 2021.
