As you can see above is the logo for Kung Fu Panda 2, or Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom as it’s officially known, the sequel to DreamWorks’ hit animated film about a lovable panda who learns to master Kung Fu against all odds. The logo isn’t much but it is our first look at any official imagery from the sequel, not that it’s going to look much different than the first one mind you.
To go along with the logo, DreamWorks has also released the official synopsis for Kung Fu Panda 2. We already know generally what the sequel will be about – Po the Panda and the rest of the Kung Fu animals facing up against a new villain and weapon that threatens the very existence of the titular martial art.
Thanks to the official Kung Fu Panda site we have a little more clarity on the film’s story. Take a look at the official synopsis below:
Po is now living his dream as The Dragon Warrior, protecting the Valley of Peace alongside his friends and fellow kung fu masters, The Furious Five – Tigress, Crane, Mantis, Viper and Monkey. But Po’s new life of awesomeness is threatened by the emergence of a formidable villain, who plans to use a secret, unstoppable weapon to conquer China and destroy kung fu.
It is up to Po and The Furious Five to journey across China to face this threat and vanquish it. But how can Po stop a weapon that can stop kung fu? He must look to his past and uncover the secrets of his mysterious origins; only then will he be able to unlock the strength he needs to succeed.
I was a big fan of Kung Fu Panda when it came out a couple of years ago and it’s one of the rare 21st century animated films that I think a sequel is totally warranted for. Usually, making sequels to these kinds of movies is a cash grab and nothing more (The Ice Age and Shrek franchises comes to mind), but there’s a lot more story that can be told with these characters.
Speaking of the characters, save for the villainous Tai Lung all of your favorites from the first film will be returning: Jack Black (Po), Angelina Jolie (Tigress), Jackie Chan (Monkey), Seth Rogen (Mantis), Lucy Liu (Viper), David Cross (Crane) and Dustin Hoffman (Master Shifu) will all be reprising their respective roles.
New additions to the voice cast include Gary Oldman as the new villain Peacock, Jean-Claude Van Damme as Master Croc, Michelle Yeoh as a goat named The Soothsayer and Vincent Garber as Master Thundering Rhino.
Just when you thought the voice cast was at its most star-studded with the first Kung Fu Panda, they go ahead and add a few more names to the pile of awesomeness. With that cast and a solid plot I very much look forward to what DreamWorks has in store for us with Kung Fu Panda 2. Most importantly, can they top the first one?
Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom will hit 3D and regular theaters on May 27th, 2011.
