Kunal Nayyar celebrates The Big Bang Theory's anniversary with a sweet message, and it somehow makes the Big Bang Theory Raj ending much sadder. Like Kaley Cuoco's Penny and Simon Helberg's Howard, Nayyar was brought in later on in the series as Raj after the original The Big Bang Theory pilot was reworked. Despite being a primary player in the sitcom, however, Raj was mostly treated as a supporting character, as emphasized in his final fate in the series.

The Big Bang Theory was still very popular when it ended in 2019. CBS was interested in keeping the sitcom on the air for as long as possible given this, but the decision to wrap things up ultimately landed on Jim Parsons' lap. After more than a decade of playing Sheldon, he was looking to leave the project, resulting in the cast and crew capping things off altogether. Despite an uneven last year, The Big Bang Theory had a great finale; each character was entering a new chapter in their life — except Raj, who was left with a rather bland professional arc and a non-existent love life.

Kunal Nayyar's Anniversary Post

In light of The Big Bang Theory's anniversary, Kunal Nayyar took to his official Instagram to celebrate the milestone year, saying that not a day goes by that he doesn't think about his time on the show. It was an incredibly heartfelt message; it makes sense that he continues to be attached to the series, given his more than a decade stint on it. Nayyar talked about how important the show was to his life and he said it had "given me more than I could ever imagine, and there is not a day that goes by that I do not in some way, think about my time on the @bigbangtheory."

That being said, he was the only cast member who took the time to celebrate it on social media. This is yet another reminder of how wasted Raj was on the show. The astrophysicist member of the Pasadena gang was arguably the nicest and most kind-hearted character on the show, and yet, he didn't get enough screen time as his friends did. Raj deserved way more than what The Big Bang Theory gave him in terms of personal narrative. It also made The Big Bang Theory Raj ending such a missed opportunity for the popular sitcom.

How Big Bang Theory Finale Could Have Given Raj A Happy Ending

Raj and Anu on their first date on the Big Bang theory

CBS gave Raj a new love interest in Anu (Rati Gupta) in The Big Bang Theory's final season. After years of dating failures, Raj reached out to his dad for help, who arranged a marriage for him. Despite their rather great relationship, the sitcom broke them up. What's worse is there wasn't a concrete reason for the split. The pair could have remained steadfast and eventually tied the knot, finally marrying off the last single member of the Pasadena gang. Otherwise, The Big Bang Theory Raj ending could have given him more to do in terms of his personal arc, including going for a better job or starting dating again.

Instead, The Big Bang Theory Raj ending left him to be a supporting player until there was no time left for him to focus on his own story. Though Sarah Michelle Geller's guest appearance on The Big Bang Theory finale livens up Raj's series ending, it's a tiny moment compared to the closing arcs of the rest of the main cast. Due to the continued popularity of The Big Bang Theory, calls for a revival remain persistent. If CBS decides to bring back the Pasadena gang on the small screen, it needs to put more focus on Raj and give him the ending that he truly deserves.
