The TV show Krypton will premiere on Syfy at an unspecified point in 2018. DC comics has been enjoying quite a bit of success on television. Arrow is about to conclude its fifth season and spawned the Arrowverse – with The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow all connecting to each other and all renewed for next year. Gotham has also received a renewal, telling the story of how the various heroes and villains of Batman’s story came to be. So it is no surprise that another prequel series is in the works for a popular comic character. Syfy has given a series order to Krypton.
Set on the home planet of both Superman and Supergirl, it was Krypton’s imminent destruction that sent the cousins to Earth. Krypton is generally considered to have been an advanced planet, with incredible scientific achievements and technology. But in spite of all their knowledge and accomplishments, the people of Krypton either could not or simply did not prevent their entire planet from exploding. Only a few escaped the destruction of the planet, many of them making their way to Earth and becoming either heroes or villains when the yellow sun gave them super powers.
While an exact date has not been announced, SyFy has revealed that the new series will premiere some time in 2018, so there is quite a bit of a wait left for fans to anticipate the show. The show’s description is also available:
Set two generations before the destruction of the legendary Man of Steel’s home planet, Krypton follows Superman’s grandfather (Cameron Cuffe, The Halcyon) — whose House of El was ostracized and shamed — as he fights to redeem his family’s honor and save his beloved world from chaos.
Not much of the planet Krypton has been seen on film and television – since the planet’s destruction happened when Clark/Superman was still a baby and generally is used to kick-start his story. More of the planet has been shown though his cousin Kara/Supergirl, who was older when she left. Aside from the late attempts to save the planet made by members of The House of El and the adults sending their children away, most of the filmed knowledge of the planet has come from the image of Jor-El in the fortress of Solitude, and from the Supergirl episode ‘For The Girl Who Has Everything’ where Kara was trapped in a fantasy on Krypton.
As the comic’s fans know, much of Krypton’s description and story has changed over the years, giving the writers of Krypton many different elements and options to take for their story. The planet is home to many strange and wondrous creatures and stunning landscapes who will hopefully be shown, as well as marvelous technologies only dreamed of here on Earth. The one big consistent is that the planet has a red sun. Since Kryptonians get their superpowers from the radiation of our yellow sun, this is not going to be a series about people flying around and saving the day. The characters on Krypton will not be powerful heroes, which should ironically make this series a very human story.
Krypton will premiere on Syfy at some point in 2018.
