[Update: Video removed at the request of Syfy and NBC Universal]

Syfy is touting the upcoming release of its Superman-inspired series Krypton with a new teaser trailer. Since Zack Snyder's Superman reboot Man of Steel became a blockbuster hit in 2013, the interest in the iconic DC superhero is at an all-time high. Played by the charismatic Henry Cavill, the 2013 Superman origins film essentially built the foundation of the DCEU, and was followed up by Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, with Wonder Woman coming in June and Justice League set for November.

Syfy, on the flip side, is going back before Man of Steel to explore the story of the family that bore Kal-El with Krypton, which will debut later this year. In a video teaser released on Instagram, Syfy sets it up by saying, "Behind the greatest her is a story you never knew." The narrator of the teaser goes on to say:

"What do we lose when a civilization falls? We lose its knowledge ... its memories ... legends of conquest ... and enduring love. It's our good fortune one of our own survived. But you might know of us and wonder. But this is not the story of how our world died. This is the story of how we lived."

Excitement has been brewing for Krypton ever since Syfy greenlighted the pilot for the Superman prequel series a year ago. Being developed by The Dark Knight and Man of Steel screenwriter David S. Goyer since 2014, Krypton is, according to Syfy, "set two generations before the destruction of the legendary Man of Steel’s home planet."

The release of the teaser for Krypton comes three days after the full Krypton trailer leaked online and subsequently pulled by Syfy. The cast for the series includes Camerone Cuffe, who will play Seg-El – Jor-El's father and Kal-El's grandfather; Ian McElhinney as Seg-El's grandfather Val-El; and Georgina Campbell as Lyta Zod, a member of Krypton’s military caste, which in the future, of course, will be led by Superman's foe General Zod.

With Goyer as the creative force behind Krypton, fans should prepare themselves for a series that should be nothing short of spectacular. Whether it's an actual prequel to Man of Steel is yet to be seen, but considering Goyer wrote the script for that film (based on his story with Christopher Nolan), the idea is not completely out of reason. With any luck, the series will find the same success as FOX's Batman prequel series Gotham, which has proven that there's a lot of valuable history be mined in the DC Comics universe.
