Syfy's Krypton may have just written off a major Superman villain in the penultimate episode of season 2. The destruction of Wegthor in the final moments of the episode could be the last fans will see of Doomsday on Krypton.
All season long, General Zod (Colin Salmon) and his forces have been involved in a civil war with Val-El (Ian McElhinney) and the rebels. Much of the conflict playing out in season 2 has taken place on Krypton's moon, Wegthor. Zod's disdain for the rebels heated up after Lyta-Zod (Georgina Cambell) was apparently killed, even though the character was eventually revealed to be a clone. Zod's determination to destroy the rebels led him to desperate measures. And thanks to the parasitic alien Black Mercy, Zod was able to gain control of Doomsday.
In Krypton season 2, episode 9, "Blood Moon", General Zod finally unleashes Doomsday on the rebels. As the rebels struggle to survive against Doomsday, Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos) points out that the only person who can beat Doomsday is Superman, who doesn't exist anymore. Seg (Cameron Cuffe) devises a plan to steal one of Zod's ships and avoid Doomsday altogether, while he and Kem (Rasmus Hardiker) attempt to blow up the moon with explosive charges. Seg escapes, but the explosion wipes out Wegthor, and appears to take Doomsday with it.
Of course, it's doubtful that Doomsday, one of Superman's greatest enemies who has actually killed the Man of Steel before, is really dead. However, that doesn't mean Doomsday is guaranteed to come back. Krypton's comic book-accurate take on Doomsday - one that includes a brand new origin for the fan-favorite villain - has played an instrumental role in season 2, which culminated in a dramatic showdown with the Kryptonian rebels. So it does seem possible that this could be the end of Doomsday's story on Krypton. Doomsday, who has been repeatedly referred to as unkillable, likely survived the explosion and may be floating around in outer space. He may not return again until his historic battle with Superman two centuries into the future.
Even if it's only temporary, Doomsday being taken out of the equation is good news for Seg-El and the others. Doomsday was Zod's greatest weapon, just as Brainiac was for Seg. Now the playing field has been leveled. Without Doomsday on Zod's side, Seg may actually stand a chance at defeating his son in the Krypton season 2 finale.
